Migrate from Facebook to Google+

Transitioning from Facebook to Google+
For users with substantial time and data accumulated on Facebook, the prospect of switching to a new social platform can seem daunting. This guide provides several recommendations for transferring your information from your existing Facebook profile to a new Google+ account.
Migrating Content Between Social Networks
Changing social networks isn't always straightforward, however, fortunately, several utilities are available to facilitate the transfer of photos, videos, and connections. The migration of wall posts and direct messages between different networks is generally impractical and will therefore be excluded from this process.
Specifically, we will focus on transferring the media and social graph elements that are most readily portable. This ensures a smoother transition and allows you to quickly rebuild your network on Google+.
What Can Be Transferred?
- Photos: Your image library can be moved.
- Videos: Video content is also transferable.
- Friends: Connections can be migrated, allowing you to reconnect with contacts on Google+.
It's important to note that certain types of content, such as past conversations and status updates, are not easily transferred due to platform-specific formats and functionalities. Focusing on the transferable elements will streamline the migration process.
Obtaining Your Facebook Data
The initial step involves acquiring a complete archive of your Facebook data. Begin by accessing your Facebook account and navigating to the settings section, typically found in the upper-right corner of the interface.

Within the settings menu, select the option to "download your information" by clicking "learn more" adjacent to it.

You will be prompted to re-enter your password for security verification. After submitting your credentials, proceed by clicking "continue." An email notification will be dispatched to your registered email address once the data export is finalized.

Upon receiving the email, click the provided link to initiate the download of a compressed zip file containing all your Facebook data.

Once downloaded, extract the contents of the zip archive. Then, open the index.html file within the extracted folder.

This will allow you to review and confirm that all of your information has been successfully included in the downloaded archive.
Importing Photographs
The Google+ platform utilizes Picasa web albums for photo sharing. To begin the process, the Picasa software must be downloaded from the link provided.

Following installation, launch Picasa and incorporate the previously downloaded Facebook photos folder into the Picasa library.

Configure Picasa to scan the designated folders only once, then allow the import procedure to commence.

After the images have completed importing into Picasa, locate the relevant albums and select the "Sync to Web" option, which is typically found on the right-hand side.

A new window will appear, prompting you to log in to your web albums account. Enter your Google+ credentials, and a subsequent window will request verification of your upload preferences. Select "change settings" to adjust these preferences as desired.
It is advisable to ensure the "use the above settings" checkbox is ticked to avoid repeated prompts.
For enhanced privacy, we suggest initially setting the visibility of your newly created albums to "private." Sharing settings can be modified later through the Google+ interface, preventing accidental public exposure of sensitive images.

Return to Picasa and initiate the synchronization process; your photos will then be uploaded to Google+ in the background.

Sharing Your Photographs on Google+
Once your images have been successfully uploaded, access Google+ by logging in.
Then, locate and click the "Photos" section within the top banner of the interface.

Navigating to Your Albums
On the left-hand side of the screen, you will find a navigation menu.
From this menu, select "Albums" to view your collections.

Sharing an Album
Open the specific album you recently uploaded.
At the top of the album view, click the "Share Album" button to initiate the sharing process.

By default, this action will make your album publicly accessible and generate a post containing a link to it within your Google+ stream.

Controlling Album Visibility
If you prefer not to share the album publicly, you can modify the sharing settings.
Remove the "Public" circle and instead select specific circles or individuals with whom you wish to share the album.
This will still create a stream post, but its visibility will be limited to your chosen recipients.
Be aware that individuals with whom you share an album may have the ability to re-share it publicly, so exercise caution and share only with trusted contacts.

Preventing Stream Posts
To prevent the album from appearing in your Google+ stream, utilize the "edit" button located on the main album page.
This allows you to adjust the sharing settings without simultaneously posting the album to your stream.

Transferring Your Video Content
The process of importing videos isn't as streamlined as importing images. To begin transferring your Facebook videos, locate the Facebook export file you previously downloaded. Within this file, you’ll find a dedicated folder containing your videos.

Access your Google+ account and navigate to your profile section, then select the "videos" option.

On the right-hand side, click the "upload new videos" button. Then, simply drag the video files from your computer directly into your web browser.

After the video upload is complete, you are able to assign names, and create and share albums directly from within Google+.

Importing Contacts from Facebook
Begin the process by navigating to login.yahoo.com and accessing your Facebook account, or utilizing an existing yahoo account if one is already established.
You will be prompted to confirm access to your Facebook data.

Following successful sign-in, proceed to address.yahoo.com. From the dropdown menu, select “tools” and then choose “import”.

From the available options, Facebook should be selected as the source for your contacts.

Once you’ve confirmed access to your contact list, the importing process will initiate automatically.

Subsequently, utilize the tools menu to export your contacts as a .csv file.

Choose to export to Microsoft Outlook, complete the captcha verification, and then save the resulting file.

Now, access your Gmail account and navigate to the “contacts” section. Select “more actions” and then choose “import”.

Locate and select the .csv file that was previously downloaded for importing.

You may optionally specify a new group for the imported contacts. The import should then proceed without issue.

Return to Google+ where your newly imported contacts will be visible under the “find and invite” feature.
You can then add these contacts to your circles and send invitations to those who are not yet Google+ users.

Finally, download the Picasa application.
