Facebook News Feed: Restoring Hidden Connections

Despite frequent updates to its menus and interfaces, Facebook doesn't necessarily improve usability with each change. Poor menu organization and ambiguous language can make modifying settings – or reversing those modifications – surprisingly challenging. This guide will assist a user in revitalizing their news feed by restoring visibility to friends who were previously hidden.

Reader's Question

Dear How-To Geek,

While not a critical issue, I'm experiencing some frustration. Last year, due to a surge of politically charged posts from Facebook friends, I frequently used the "I don't want to see this" and "Unfollow" options. Consequently, I effectively "muted" a significant number of people. Looking back, I may have acted too quickly, and now I wish to re-populate my news feed.

However, I'm unable to locate the settings to accomplish this. I've thoroughly searched all menus and sub-menus without success. I did find a list of blocked users, but it's empty. Is there a list of muted individuals available, and if so, how can I access it?

Sincerely, Facebook Frustrated

Locating the Hidden List

A list does indeed exist, but its placement is intentionally obscure, making accidental discovery unlikely. Ensure you are logged into your Facebook account on a desktop or laptop computer – this process is not available on mobile devices. Navigate to your news feed.

Examine the list of options located in the far left menu, beneath your profile picture; this is where you'll find links such as "News Feed" and "Messages".

Hover your mouse cursor slightly to the left of the "News Feed" link. A small gear icon will appear.

Clicking this gear icon will open a small "Edit Settings" box. Select "Edit Settings" to access the "Edit News Feed Settings" panel.

Restoring Visibility

This panel displays a comprehensive list of individuals you have unfollowed and hidden posts from. To restore their posts to your feed, simply click the "x" next to their name, then click "Save".

Alternatively, you can visit each person's individual Facebook profile page. A "Follow/Unfollow" button is located in the lower right corner of their cover photo, allowing you to toggle visibility.
