Facebook's Major Update: Introducing the Timeline

Facebook recently unveiled a significant number of new features, widely considered by industry analysts to be the most substantial overhaul in the platform’s history.

These modifications are largely attributed to the increasing competition from Google Plus.

Among the introduced changes, a complete redesign of the user profile page stands out.

The Timeline: A New Profile Experience

This redesigned profile is known as the "Timeline," and it has the potential to be the most debated aspect of the update.

The Timeline presents a fundamentally different way of showcasing a user’s history on Facebook.

Accessing the Timeline Early

Currently, the Timeline design isn't available to all users.

It may take several weeks before the update is rolled out to your account.

However, if you wish to preview and activate the Timeline on your profile immediately, a method exists to do so.

Visibility Considerations

It’s important to understand that your new Timeline profile will initially only be visible to other users who have also adopted the Timeline design.

Individuals still using the previous profile layout will continue to view your profile in its original format until the Timeline becomes universally available.

This phased rollout ensures a smoother transition for all Facebook users.

Authorizing Facebook Developer Access to Your Account

Initially, you must register as a Facebook developer. This process entails granting Facebook Developer permission to interact with your Facebook account.

Navigate to the designated registration page and select "allow" to proceed with authorization.

Understanding Developer Authorization

This authorization is a necessary prerequisite for utilizing certain Facebook platform features. It allows developers to test and integrate applications with Facebook.

Rest assured that this permission is specifically for development purposes and does not grant unauthorized access to your personal data.

Important Note: This step is crucial for the subsequent stages of integration and functionality.

The process is straightforward and designed to be completed quickly, ensuring a seamless experience.

By granting this access, you are enabling the necessary connections for the intended application to function correctly.

Initiating App Creation

The subsequent action involves the creation of a new application. It’s important to note that this process isn’t about developing a functional app at this stage.

Located in the upper right corner of the current page are two distinct buttons: "edit app" and "create new app". Select the "create new app" option to proceed.

App Naming Process

Upon selection, a dialog box will appear. Within this box, you are prompted to enter a name for the application in both provided fields.

The chosen name is largely arbitrary, provided it hasn't already been claimed by another user. A minimum length of seven characters is required for the app name.

As an example, "coolmuoapp" was used, simply as a readily available option. Following this, click "continue" to advance.

Confirming Your Humanity

A verification step is now required to demonstrate that you are a human user, and not an automated program.

Please complete the captcha challenge presented and then click the "submit" button to proceed.

This measure helps protect the system from malicious activity and ensures a secure experience for all users.

Defining an Action within Facebook

You are nearing completion of the process. On this final screen, focus solely on the "Open Graph" link located in the upper left corner. Selecting this link will present you with the following interface:

The next step involves selecting an action from the initial text field and an object from the subsequent field. For instance, I have chosen "watch" as the action and "movie" as the object. Following this selection, press the "get started" button.

Upon processing, Facebook will redirect you back to the Open Graph page. An error message may occasionally appear, but this can be disregarded. Proceed directly to your Facebook profile. Within a short timeframe, typically one to two minutes, you should receive an invitation to test the timeline profile. Accept this invitation to begin.

Personalizing Your Profile

The area at the top, currently displaying a Highland cow (a personal favorite), is designated as the "cover." This is where you can upload a custom photo to personalize your page. Feel free to express your individuality and select an image that accurately represents you.

Overall, the timeline profile represents a noteworthy evolution. However, it constitutes a significant shift from the previous profile layout, and it’s likely some users will strongly dislike the new design. We recommend giving it a trial period.

Exploring the Timeline Feature

As the name suggests, the "timeline" allows you to navigate through each year of your Facebook history. You can review all past status updates. I found it quite engaging to revisit older posts and reflect on past thoughts and experiences.
