X (Twitter) Marketplace: Buy & Sell Inactive Handles

X Launches Marketplace for Inactive Usernames
X is introducing a new marketplace dedicated to inactive usernames. This platform will enable Premium subscribers to both request and purchase desired usernames.
Marketplace Options
The marketplace will feature both complimentary and paid avenues for acquiring eligible handles. X indicates that particularly sought-after usernames could range in price from $2,500 to sums exceeding seven figures.
“Priority” Handles
Usernames categorized as “Priority” typically encompass full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric strings. These handles are available for request at no cost to Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers.
Upon approval of a request, X will transfer the handle to the user without charge. However, cancellation or downgrading of a subscription will result in the original handle reverting to the user’s account after a 30-day period.
Examples of “Priority” handles include usernames such as @GabrielJones, @PizzaEater, and @ParadoxAI.
Revenue and Subscription Benefits
The introduction of this marketplace is expected to generate revenue for X through direct payments. It also has the potential to stimulate greater interest in the Premium subscription service, especially given current challenges within the advertising sector.
Request Process and Approval
X clarifies that not all requests will be granted and that typical review times are around three business days. Once a request is approved, the user’s previous handle is held and will not be reassigned.
“Rare” Handles
“Rare” handles are defined as short, common, or culturally important names. These will not be accessible through standard requests.
Instead, they will be offered via public drops and direct purchases, available by invitation only.
Acquiring “Rare” Handles
For public drops, multiple users can submit applications for a single handle. X states that selection will be based on a user’s platform contributions, intended handle usage, and overall engagement and reach.
Direct purchase pricing will be determined by factors including word popularity, character count, and cultural relevance. Once a “Rare” handle is purchased, the user retains ownership even if their Premium subscription lapses.
Examples of “Rare” handles include usernames like @Pizza, @Tom, and @One.
Preventing Misuse
X explains that the marketplace approach, rather than a mass release of inactive handles, is intended to mitigate bot spam and misuse. The controlled process ensures a fair and secure distribution of usernames.
Watchlist Feature
Users who have a specific inactive handle in mind that is not currently listed on the marketplace can “Register” their interest. This adds the handle to their Watchlist, and X will notify them if it becomes available.
