Video Game Union Achieves First Contract with Microsoft

Microsoft and ZeniMax QA Testers Reach Tentative Contract Agreement

Quality assurance testers who are members of a union at ZeniMax, a video game holding company, revealed on Friday the achievement of a preliminary contract agreement with Microsoft. This development follows Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax in 2021.

This agreement marks the first union contract to be established by Microsoft within the United States. The process began a little over two years ago when roughly 300 QA testers declared their intention to unionize with the Communications Workers of America.

Key Terms of the Agreement

Negotiations have been ongoing since the initial unionization announcement. According to reports from Bloomberg, the proposed contract includes a company-wide pay increase of 13.5%, effective July 1st.

Furthermore, the contract integrates a previously disclosed arrangement concerning the implementation of AI technologies. A vote to ratify the contract is scheduled for June 20th among union members.

Significance of the Agreement

Page Branson, a QA tester and a member of the union’s bargaining committee, described the agreement as “a monumental victory” for both current and future video game industry employees.

Growing Unionization at Microsoft

The ZeniMax QA team was the first at Microsoft to successfully unionize. However, other teams within the company have since taken similar steps.

The Communications Workers of America now represents over 2,000 Microsoft video game workers as union members. This demonstrates a growing trend of worker organization within the company.

Microsoft’s willingness to reach an agreement signifies a potential shift in its approach to labor relations within the gaming sector.
