Grand Theft Auto Online's New Robotaxi Chaos

The newest update for Grand Theft Auto Online introduces robotaxis operated by a fictional company, “KnoWay.” These vehicles appear designed to cause disruption and mayhem within the game.

Destructive Debut

A recently released trailer showcases KnoWay vans, equipped with lidar sensors, navigating city streets erratically. The vans are depicted colliding with other vehicles and even crashing through advertising displays for the company itself.

While the level of chaos exceeds incidents involving Waymo’s robotaxis, the in-game vehicles bear a resemblance to Waymo’s earlier Chrysler Pacifica vans. This expansion, titled “A Safehouse in the Hills,” will be accessible to players beginning December 10.

Rogue AI or Player Interference?

It remains uncertain whether the vans in the trailer are being commandeered by players or are operating autonomously and malfunctioning. However, Rockstar Games suggests players will be tasked with halting the progression of a large-scale surveillance initiative within the downloadable content.

The trailer also hints at a narrative involving an AI assistant called “Haviland,” indicating that the broader technology sector will be a central theme in this storyline.

Real-World Parallels and Surveillance Concerns

Waymo has stated its commitment to resisting government requests for vehicle footage deemed excessively broad or unlawful. Nevertheless, the company’s robotaxis have faced criticism regarding their potential contribution to an expanding surveillance infrastructure.

This concern has fueled acts of vandalism targeting Waymo vehicles. Over the past several years, Waymo SUVs have been subjected to arson, damage, and tire slashing in various cities.

KnoWay's Ominous Slogan

Rockstar Games appears to be leveraging these real-world anxieties. The tagline for KnoWay’s “autonomous hailing system” within the game is: “We Kno where you’re going.” This suggests players may be inclined to express their frustrations with the virtual vehicles upon the update’s release.

Waymo has not provided a statement regarding this matter.

Addressing Vandalism

During TechCrunch Disrupt in October, Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana condemned the vandalism, emphasizing her company’s dedication to collaborating with law enforcement to identify and prosecute those responsible for damaging their fleet.

The new Grand Theft Auto Online expansion taps into current anxieties surrounding autonomous vehicles and data privacy.
