Unity CTO Steve Collins Resigns After 6 Months

Unity CTO Steve Collins Announces Departure
Steve Collins, the Chief Technology Officer of Unity, the prominent game engine developer, is resigning from his position. This information was verified by a company spokesperson in a statement to TechCrunch.
Collins assumed the role of CTO at Unity only half a year ago. Prior to joining Unity, he held the position of CTO at King, the mobile gaming firm renowned for the popular Candy Crush franchise.
Reason for Leaving
Unity has stated that Collins’ decision to depart is a personal one, made independently. The company expressed its appreciation for his service and contributions during his tenure.
A representative for Unity commented, “Confirmation is given that Steve Collins has chosen to leave Unity due to personal reasons. We extend our gratitude for his contributions. As our ongoing transformation progresses, we are assured that our exceptional technology team will continue to advance our strategic objectives.”
Recent Challenges at Unity
The past few years have presented significant internal challenges for Unity. In the autumn of 2023, the company unveiled alterations to its pricing structure that sparked considerable backlash from the game developer community.
While certain aspects of these changes were subsequently revised, the resulting controversy led to the resignation of John Riccitiello, Unity’s then-CEO.
Further instability followed with a workforce reduction in the months after Riccitiello’s departure. Unity eliminated 25% of its workforce, impacting approximately 1,800 employees.
Developer Sentiment and Future Outlook
Although Unity has moved past these specific incidents, a degree of skepticism persists among some game developers regarding the company’s direction.
While Collins’ exit isn’t directly linked to Unity’s past difficulties, another leadership change could potentially introduce further disruption.
The company is relying on its existing technical team to maintain momentum and navigate its ongoing evolution.
