Twitter Expands In-App Tipping to Android Users

Following its initial release on iOS in September, Twitter is now making its in-app tipping functionality available to all Android users aged 18 and over.

This feature allows users to receive financial contributions from their followers directly within the application, utilizing platforms like Cash App, PayPal, Venmo, and Patreon.

Setting Up Tips on Android

Android users can enable the receiving of tips by navigating to their profile settings. This is done by selecting “Edit profile” and then choosing the “Tips” option.

Twitter emphasizes that “Tips” provides a streamlined method for sharing payment profile links.

The Purpose of the Feature

The social media platform states the feature is designed to facilitate support for individuals who contribute to conversations on Twitter.

This includes content creators, fundraisers, those in need of assistance, or simply individuals who provide entertainment.

Evolution of Twitter’s Monetization Efforts

The introduction of “Tips” followed initial reports in May indicating Twitter was developing a direct payment system.

This launch on Android arrives shortly after the rollout of “Ticketed Spaces” for Android users, which allows hosts to charge for access to live audio conversations within Twitter Spaces.

Ticketed Spaces are intended to provide financial support to creators for their time and effort in managing public discussions.

Competition in the Social Media Landscape

Twitter is not alone in exploring monetization options for its users.

TikTok recently confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing a similar in-app tipping feature, extending beyond its existing gifting system within LIVE streams.

Currently, this TikTok feature is limited to a testing phase and is not yet broadly accessible.

Competing with Established Platforms

These direct tipping features from both TikTok and Twitter represent a move to compete with platforms like Instagram and YouTube.

These platforms already offer established and profitable avenues for creators to generate income.

Ultimately, these initiatives aim to empower creators and foster a more sustainable ecosystem within the social media environment.
