Google Disco: Build Web Apps from Browser Tabs with Gemini

Google Introduces Disco: An AI-Powered Tool for Web App Creation
On Thursday, Google unveiled a novel AI experiment designed for web browsers: Disco. This new product, leveraging the power of Gemini, facilitates the transformation of your currently open browser tabs into personalized applications.
Disco enables the creation of what Google terms “GenTabs.” These are interactive web applications proactively suggested to assist users in completing tasks related to their current browsing activity. Furthermore, users can construct their own applications simply by using written prompts.
Utilizing GenTabs for Enhanced Productivity
For example, if a user is engaged in studying a specific academic discipline, GenTabs might propose the development of a web application to visually represent the information. This could significantly improve comprehension of fundamental concepts.
Alternatively, in a more practical context, GenTabs can be employed to generate a meal plan based on a collection of online recipes or to aid in travel planning during research.
While similar functionalities are available through existing AI-powered chatbots, GenTabs dynamically constructs these customized experiences utilizing Gemini 3. It draws upon information from both your browser and your Gemini chat history.
Once an application is created, further refinement is possible through the use of natural language commands.
Integrating AI into the Browsing Experience
Google emphasizes that the generative elements within the GenTabs experience will always provide links back to the original source materials.
Similar to other companies in the AI sector, Google is actively exploring ways to integrate AI more deeply into web browsing. Instead of creating a separate AI browser, like Perplexity’s Comet or ChatGPT Atlas, Google has chosen to integrate its AI assistant, Gemini, directly into the Chrome browser.
This integration allows users to optionally ask questions about the webpage they are currently viewing.
Focus on Comprehensive Browsing
With GenTabs, the emphasis extends beyond the currently displayed page. It considers the user’s overall browsing activity, encompassing multiple tabs – be it for research, learning, or other purposes.
Initially, access to this feature will be limited to a select group of testers through Google Labs, who will provide valuable feedback on their experience.
Google anticipates that promising concepts developed through Disco may eventually be incorporated into other, more extensive Google products.
Future Developments and Access
GenTabs is presented as the “first feature” being tested within the broader Disco framework, suggesting that additional features will be introduced over time.
Interested users can join a waitlist to download the Disco application, starting with macOS compatibility.
