Swarmia Raises $8M Seed Funding - Data Management for Developers

Swarmia Secures €6.7M in Funding to Enhance Software Development Processes
Swarmia, a B2B SaaS provider focused on data-driven solutions for software development teams, has successfully closed a €5.7M Seed round, supplementing a prior, undisclosed €1M pre-seed investment. This brings the company’s total funding to €6.7M, equivalent to $8M.
Investment Details
The Seed round was spearheaded by Alven Capital, with significant participation from Jigsaw VC, Irena Goldenberg, Alex Algard, Lars Fjeldsoe-Nielsen, Jonathan Benhamou, and Romain Huet. Lifeline Ventures, the initial investor in the €1M pre-seed round, also contributed to this latest funding stage.
The newly acquired capital will be strategically allocated towards expanding Swarmia’s operations into the United States market.
Founder's Background
Otto Hilska, the founder of Swarmia, brings a wealth of experience as a serial entrepreneur. He previously founded Flowdock, a team collaboration platform later acquired by Rally Software, and served as the Chief Product Officer at Smartly.io.
Addressing a Critical Need in Software Development
According to Hilska, numerous software development organizations are underperforming due to a lack of clear insight into their workflows and a deficiency in systematic approaches to continuous improvement.
Swarmia addresses this challenge by integrating with popular development tools, including GitHub, Jira, Linear, and various CI platforms. This integration facilitates the creation of a comprehensive overview of engineering team dynamics.
Competitive Landscape
The competitive landscape includes companies like Pluralsight Flow, which has raised $192.5M, and CodeClimate Velocity, with $15M in funding.
Swarmia’s Differentiators
However, Hilska emphasizes a key distinction: “We are uniquely positioned as the only product actively utilized by developers themselves.” The focus isn’t on individual developer monitoring, but rather on fostering team-level enhancements.
The product’s development was a collaborative effort with pilot customers, utilizing shared Slack channels and daily iterations to ensure scalability and adaptability. Teams can define their own Working Agreements, leading to improved data quality and a better understanding of actual workflows.
Furthermore, a dedicated Slack bot assists teams in adopting and maintaining these working agreements, driving positive behavioral changes.
Investor Perspective
Thomas Cuvelier, Partner at Alven, stated: “Software is transforming industries, yet software engineering – a significant cost center – often remains opaque. Swarmia effectively tackles this issue by providing visibility into engineering processes and empowering executives to make data-driven decisions.”
Cuvelier added, “The progress achieved by Otto and his team is remarkable, and they are poised to revolutionize working practices for the world’s 27 million developers.”
