Figma AI: Remove Objects & Extend Images with New Tools

Figma Introduces AI-Powered Image Editing Capabilities
Today marks the release of new, artificial intelligence-driven image-editing functionalities within the design tool Figma. These additions include the ability to remove objects from images, isolate specific elements, and expand image dimensions.
Streamlining the Design Workflow
Figma asserts that these new features will eliminate the need to switch between different applications for image manipulation. Previously, designers had to export images to external tools and then re-import them after editing.
While generative models, such as Nano Banana, excel at image creation, the company recognizes that users frequently require precise editing tools that don’t rely on text-based prompts.
Enhanced Selection and Object Manipulation
The platform’s lasso tool has been significantly improved. It now allows users to select an object, remove it entirely, or isolate it for repositioning within the image.
Crucially, when an object is moved, the surrounding image details – including background elements and color schemes – are preserved. Users can also refine aspects like lighting, shadows, color balance, and focus on selected objects.
Expanding Images with AI Assistance
Figma is also introducing an image-expansion feature to its design suite. This is particularly useful when adapting creative assets to different formats and needing to fill in missing background details.
For example, this feature simplifies the process of creating web or mobile banners from a small, 1x1 pixel image. It reduces the need for repetitive cropping and element adjustments.
Consolidated Image Editing Toolbar
In addition to these new features, Figma is centralizing all its image-editing tools into a single, easily accessible toolbar. This toolbar enables quick selection of objects and image areas, background color changes, and the addition of annotations or text.
The company highlights that background removal is a frequently performed action on the platform, which is why it’s receiving prominent placement within the new toolbar.
Competitive Landscape
Competitors such as Adobe and Canva have offered object removal capabilities for several years. Figma is now providing comparable functionality to its user base.
Availability and Future Plans
These new image-editing features are currently available in Figma Design and Draw. The company intends to extend their availability across all Figma tools in the coming year.
Integration with ChatGPT
This launch coincides with Adobe’s release of similar features within ChatGPT. Figma was an initial launch partner for the ChatGPT application, having integrated with it in October.
It remains uncertain whether these newly introduced functions will be accessible to users who are utilizing Figma through the OpenAI tool.
