Roblox Enhances Safety Protocols with New Parental Controls

Roblox, a widely used gaming platform primarily for younger audiences, has recently implemented significant revisions to its safety guidelines. These changes come in response to concerns raised regarding the adequacy of protections for children against potential dangers.

Such risks include exposure to inappropriate content, grooming attempts, and depictions of violence. The platform’s commitment to child safety has been a central focus of these updates.

New Features Empower Parents

On Wednesday, the company unveiled three new parental control features designed to provide greater oversight and management of a child’s Roblox experience.

These include the ability to restrict access to specific games or interactions with individuals on a child’s friend network. Parents can also now monitor the games their child spends the most time playing.

The implementation of these updates signifies a more robust strategy for ensuring a secure gaming environment for children. Accessing these new controls requires a preliminary step.

Parents must first establish a link between their own Roblox account and their child’s account. This process necessitates identity verification through either a valid ID or credit card information.

Following verification, parents can navigate to the “Parental Controls” section to manage their child’s gaming experience effectively.

Enhanced Friend Management and Content Filtering

Previously, parents could only view their child’s friend list. The new friend-blocking functionality expands upon this, allowing parents to report and block users deemed potentially harmful.

This prevents unwanted direct messaging between the restricted individual and the child. It’s important to note that children under the age of 13 cannot override parental restrictions on blocked users.

However, they can submit a request to their parents for permission to unblock them. Furthermore, while content maturity settings were already available, the new experience-level blocking provides a more granular level of control.

Children can view the list of blocked experiences and request parental approval to regain access. This fosters a dialogue about appropriate content.

Tracking Game Engagement and Screen Time

In addition to these features, parents can now view a list of the 20 games their child has played most frequently over the past week, sorted by total playtime.

Roblox had previously introduced tools for parents to monitor and set daily screen time limits for their children. This new feature builds upon those existing capabilities.

These combined updates demonstrate Roblox’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the safety and well-being of its young user base.
