Play AVI Files with Subtitles on PS3 - A How-To Guide

Enjoying Subtitled Movies on Your PlayStation 3

Attempting to view a movie with subtitles on a PlayStation 3 can present certain challenges. Initially, the console often struggles to recognize video files containing embedded subtitle streams.

The installation of a subtitle 'interpreter', similar to what is commonly done on a personal computer, doesn't typically resolve the issue. Simply placing an AVI video file and a corresponding SRT subtitle file onto the console will usually result in the subtitle file being ignored.

While streaming movies with subtitles to the PlayStation 3 via 'DLNA' is possible, this method isn't always reliable and can be quite complex, requiring significant preparation. Hardcoding subtitles was once considered the only practical solution, but this process is notably time-intensive. However, many are unaware of a simpler method for playing AVI files on the PlayStation 3.

PlayStation 3 and DivX File Support

Recent PlayStation 3 system updates have introduced support for *.DivX files, which are essentially AVIs that can contain multiple subtitle streams. If you have a standard AVI file and a subtitle file, converting them into a DivX file is a straightforward process. This tutorial is applicable to Windows, Mac OS X (Intel), and Linux operating systems.

Before proceeding, it’s important to understand that various subtitle formats exist, most being text documents with time-codes. The SRT format is the most widely used. Therefore, obtaining an SRT file is the first step in creating a subtitled DivX file.

While IDX/SUB pairs can also be used, utilizing an SRT file is recommended for simplicity.

Finding subtitles for popular videos, even those in different languages, is generally not difficult. Resources are available online to assist in locating the appropriate subtitle files.

Software Installation for Linux and Mac OS X

(If you are using a Windows computer, you can skip this step.)

Support for Linux and Mac OS X was a design consideration for this process. Although the core application, AVIAddXSubs, is designed for Windows, it functions effectively with 'Wine'.

Wine is a compatibility layer that allows Linux and Intel Macs to run many Windows applications without requiring a separate Windows installation. Further information about Wine can be found in Varun Kashyap’s article on running Windows applications on Linux or Mac.

Linux users can utilize the standard Wine environment. Mac OS X (Intel) users should consider downloading and installing the WineBottler package. Once installed, these tools enable the execution of EXE and other Windows-native files. If you encounter issues with 'corrupt' subtitles, reinstalling the application and its associated font packs may be beneficial.

Using AVIAddXSubs to Combine Files

AVIAddXSubs is a relatively small application, approximately 856KB in size, but it is crucial for this tutorial. Install the application now. It is natively designed for Windows but should function correctly with Wine on Linux or Mac OS X, as described in the previous step.

Creating the DivX File

Because DivX files employ similar video compression techniques as AVI files, integrating the subtitles is a rapid process. The initial setup, including installing the necessary applications, only needs to be completed once. Subsequent conversions should take less than a minute.

Launch AVIAddXSubs and select both the video and subtitle files. Specify the paths to your AVI and SRT files. These paths should be separated by a vertical bar ( | ). Manual input may be required to achieve this formatting, as illustrated in the example screenshot. You can select up to eight different subtitle streams if desired.

Clicking Start initiates the file processing, which should be completed quickly. The resulting DivX file will contain embedded subtitle streams and can be played on your PlayStation 3. To activate the subtitles during playback, press the triangle button and navigate the subtitle options, similar to how you would with a standard DVD.
