Pancake Secures $350,000 Seed Funding for Innovative Home Design Platform

Pancake has successfully raised $350,000 in a seed funding round. This investment will be used to further develop their platform focused on home design.

The platform uniquely integrates existing furniture with professional design expertise, offering a fresh perspective on interior spaces.

Company Origins and Mission

Founded in 2020 by Maria Jose Castro, Roberto Meza, and Alfredo Enciso – all based in Costa Rica – Pancake stemmed from personal experience. The founders recognized the challenges of creating functional workspaces during the shift to remote work.

They observed that traditional interior design services are often prohibitively expensive, limiting accessibility for many.

Pancake aims to democratize access to quality interior design, making it attainable for a wider audience.

How the Pancake Platform Works

Pancake offers a novel approach to collaborating with interior designers. Customers can easily book consultations through the website.

During a session, clients provide room measurements and photographs to the designer.

The designer then creates a detailed rendering of the redesigned space, accompanied by a comprehensive design plan.

If additional items are required, such as paint or new furniture, Pancake directs customers to relevant retailers.

Future development plans include direct integration with furniture suppliers, according to Castro.

Sustainable Design and Wellness Focus

Meza describes Pancake as a “furniture-as-a-service” model. The core principle is to maximize the use of existing furnishings.

This approach promotes the creation of healthy and sustainable living and working environments.

The company believes that a well-designed space positively impacts well-being, particularly as people spend more time at home.

Wellness in construction is a key focus for Meza and the Pancake team.

Even subtle design choices can significantly influence a person’s emotional response to a space.

Funding Allocation and Future Plans

The seed funding will be allocated to platform development and the introduction of new features.

A planned feature is an ecological footprint calculator, enabling customers to assess the sustainability of their design choices.

Pancake emphasizes transparent pricing; a typical two-hour design session costs $199, with any additional expenses clearly outlined.

Investor Confidence and Growth Metrics

Christian Rudder, co-founder of OkCupid, led the seed investment round.

Rudder, who rarely invests at the seed stage, was impressed by Pancake’s rapid progress and successful marketing tests on social media.

The company has already completed over 100 designer sessions and is experiencing significant customer loyalty.

Pancake has achieved an average of 200% month-over-month revenue growth, even accounting for a four-month pause during the pandemic, as reported by Meza.

The company is now focused on brand building and refining its revenue model in preparation for a Series A funding round next year.
