Meta Launches 'Vibes': AI-Generated Short-Form Video

Meta Introduces “Vibes,” a New AI-Generated Video Feed
Meta has unveiled “Vibes,” a novel feed for both sharing and creating concise, AI-produced videos. This new feature is accessible within the Meta AI application and on the meta.ai platform.
Essentially, Vibes functions similarly to platforms like TikTok or Instagram Reels, with the key distinction being that all content presented is generated by artificial intelligence.
Zuckerberg Announces the Rollout
The introduction of Vibes was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg via an Instagram post showcasing a collection of AI-generated videos. These examples include whimsical scenes, such as fuzzy creatures leaping between cubes and a cat engaged in kneading dough.
One video depicts a scene seemingly set in Ancient Egypt, featuring a woman resembling an ancient Egyptian taking a selfie with a balcony view.
Personalized Content and Creation Tools
As users navigate the new feed, they will encounter AI-generated videos originating from both creators and fellow users. Meta’s algorithm will progressively tailor the content displayed to individual preferences.
Users are provided with the capability to either generate videos from a blank canvas or to remix existing videos found within the feed. Before publication, videos can be enhanced with new visuals, musical layers, and stylistic adjustments.
Completed videos can then be shared directly to the Vibes feed, sent via direct message, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Partnerships with AI Image Generators
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, revealed that the initial version of Vibes is being developed in collaboration with AI image generators Midjourney and Black Forest Labs. Simultaneously, Meta is continuing to refine its own proprietary AI models.
User Reaction
The announcement of Vibes has been met with a largely negative response from users, given the current oversaturation of AI-generated content. A prominent comment on Zuckerberg’s post stated, “gang nobody wants this.”
Other comments echoed this sentiment, with users questioning the purpose of the new feature and labeling the content as “AI slop.”
Concerns About AI-Generated Content
The launch of Vibes is likely to be unpopular with users, particularly as the proliferation of AI technology has led to an increase in low-quality, AI-generated content across social media. Platforms like YouTube are actively seeking ways to address this issue.
This move by Meta appears contradictory, considering the company’s earlier statements regarding “unoriginal” Facebook content and its encouragement of “authentic storytelling” over videos lacking substantial value.
Meta’s Investment in AI
The introduction of Vibes coincides with Meta’s significant investments in bolstering its AI capabilities, driven by concerns about falling behind competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind.
In June, Meta restructured its AI operations, establishing a dedicated AI division named “Meta Superintelligence Labs” following the departure of key personnel.
Subsequently, the AI division was reorganized into four focused groups: foundation models, research, product integration, and infrastructure.
