zynga reports record revenue and strong user growth while still losing $122m

Zynga announced record third-quarter revenue of $503 million, representing a 46% increase compared to the same period last year. Bookings for the quarter reached $628 million, a 59% year-over-year improvement, as detailed in their recent earnings report. The company also experienced its highest levels of mobile daily active users (31 million) and monthly active users (83 million) in six years.

Despite these positive results, Zynga reported a net loss of $122 million. This contrasts with the net income of $230 million reported during the corresponding quarter of the previous year, which included gains from the sale of Zynga’s San Francisco headquarters. As of 4:44 p.m. Eastern time, the company’s stock price had decreased by 4.9% in after-hours trading.

Prior to the earnings release, CEO Frank Gibeau explained that while the rate of growth has stabilized following the significant surge in usage experienced during the late spring and early summer of the pandemic, “User engagement and revenue generation continue to be strong. Many individuals who began playing mobile games during that time have continued to do so.”

Zynga anticipates continued growth in the fourth quarter, projecting revenue of $570 million, a 55% increase. Gibeau highlighted the potential of a strong “digital holiday” season for mobile gaming, citing the availability of new mobile titles and the ongoing impact of social distancing and lockdowns, which mean “many people will be unable to shop for gifts in physical stores.”

During the third quarter, Zynga finalized the acquisition of Rollic, a hyper-casual game publisher based in Istanbul. Gibeau stated that the Rollic team is now “completely integrated into our operations,” although Rollic’s user numbers will not be included in Zynga’s reported figures until the following quarter.

“We are in a strong position to pursue additional mergers and acquisitions,” he also noted.
