Zoox Recall: Software Issue Causes Unexpected Braking in Self-Driving Cars

Zoox Issues Recall for Autonomous Vehicles
Zoox, the self-driving technology division of Amazon, has initiated a voluntary recall impacting 258 vehicles. This action stems from potential problems within its autonomous driving system that may lead to sudden and forceful braking.
NHTSA Investigation and Incident Reports
The recall was prompted by a preliminary investigation conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in May of the previous year. This investigation began after the agency received two reports detailing collisions.
In both reported incidents, motorcyclists impacted the rear of Zoox vehicles – specifically, Toyota Highlanders outfitted with Zoox’s autonomous technology. Initial findings indicated that the autonomous systems were actively engaged in both occurrences.
Software Versions and Updates
The recall is limited to vehicles operating with software versions released prior to November 5, 2024. Zoox communicated to the NHTSA that the issue was resolved through a software update deployed by November 7, 2024.
Robotaxi Inclusion
Although the initial incidents did not involve Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxi – designed without traditional steering controls or pedals – these vehicles are also included in the recall. This is due to the fact that some robotaxis were running the affected software.
Current Testing Locations
Zoox is presently conducting trials with a restricted fleet of its custom robotaxis in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Plans were announced last June to expand testing operations to include Austin and Miami.
Industry-Wide Scrutiny
This recall occurs amidst increased regulatory oversight following a safety-related incident involving Cruise in 2023. Cruise has since ceased operations and been integrated back into its parent company, General Motors.
Previous Recalls
Last year, Waymo also issued a voluntary recall, affecting 672 Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis. This recall followed multiple reported safety incidents, including a collision with a utility pole.
This report has been updated to incorporate recent information provided by Zoox. The headline has been revised to accurately reflect the nature of the software recall.
