Zoox Launches Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas | Public Access

Zoox Robotaxi Public Launch in Las Vegas
Zoox robotaxis, uniquely designed all-electric and fully autonomous vehicles lacking traditional steering wheels and pedals, are now available to the public for hailing in Las Vegas.
Free Rides for Now
Currently, this service isn't operating as a commercial venture. Rides on the Zoox robotaxi are being offered without charge. The autonomous vehicle company, owned by Amazon, has been diligently working towards this operational milestone for several years.
Years of Development and Testing
The company dedicated six years to the development of its core technology before presenting its purpose-built, electric, and autonomous robotaxis. Public road testing in Las Vegas commenced in 2023 with the distinctive cube-shaped vehicles.
Initial tests were confined to a one-mile loop surrounding the company’s Las Vegas facilities, located in the southwest part of the city. The testing perimeter gradually expanded to include major thoroughfares like the Las Vegas Strip and adjacent roadways.
Zoox Explorer Program and App Access
Earlier this year, Zoox initiated the Zoox Explorer program, a limited pilot program providing early access to public riders in Las Vegas. The current launch extends service availability to any adult with the Zoox app, available on both iOS and Android platforms.
Limited Pickup and Drop-off Locations
While the robotaxi service area includes the Las Vegas Strip, pickup and drop-off points are currently restricted. Access is limited to five designated locations, including prominent landmarks such as Resorts World Las Vegas, AREA15, Topgolf, New York New York, and Luxor.
A company representative indicated that additional destinations will be added in the coming months to enhance service accessibility.
Future Commercialization and Regulatory Hurdles
The duration of the free ride period remains uncertain, contingent upon receiving “regulatory approval” before fares can be implemented. This requirement likely relates to a recent agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
NHTSA Exemption for Demonstrations
Last month, the NHTSA granted Zoox an exemption allowing demonstration of its custom-built robotaxis on public roads. This resolved a debate concerning compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards, which traditionally mandate features like steering wheels and pedals.
However, the current exemption permits only demonstrations, not commercial operation of the vehicles.
Expansion to San Francisco
Zoox is also preparing for a similar launch in San Francisco, where its robotaxis are already undergoing public road testing. A waitlist for the San Francisco service is now available through the Zoox app.
- Key Feature: Fully autonomous operation without steering wheel or pedals.
- Current Status: Free rides available in Las Vegas.
- Future Plans: Expansion to San Francisco and eventual commercial operation.
