Zoom Pilots Ads for Free Users - What You Need to Know

Zoom Introduces Advertising for Free Tier Users
Zoom is initiating a trial advertising program designed to display advertisements to users who utilize its “Basic” free service tier. The company states that revenue generated from these ads will be allocated towards ongoing investments and will facilitate the continued availability of the platform for free users.
Ad Display Details
Users on the Basic tier will encounter advertisements solely when participating in meetings organized by other Basic tier users. Initially, these ads will appear on the browser page presented to users upon the conclusion of their meeting. Further expansion of ad placement within the user interface is possible following the completion of this initial testing phase.
As part of this pilot program, Zoom users will be presented with a banner on the company website. This banner will provide a direct link to the platform’s cookie management tools, enabling users to control the types of advertisements they are shown.
Zoom has also updated its Privacy Statement to explicitly state that content from meetings, webinars, or messaging interactions will not be utilized for marketing, promotional activities, or advertising by third parties.
A Shift in Zoom’s Strategy
While Zoom has affirmed that advertisements will not be shown during active meetings, this development represents a notable shift in the company’s approach. The free Basic service, which allows for group meetings up to 40 minutes in length, was instrumental in driving Zoom’s rapid growth during the pandemic.
This new change introduces a new limitation for Basic users, a step the company deems essential for sustainability.
Janine Pelosi, Zoom’s chief marketing officer, explained in a blog post that, “This adjustment guarantees that our free Basic users can continue to connect with friends, family, and colleagues using the reliable platform we’ve consistently provided.”
Expanding Beyond Video Conferencing
This change occurs as Zoom concentrates on evolving beyond its core function as a video conferencing platform. Earlier this year, the company established a $100 million investment fund to support companies developing applications built on the Zoom platform.
The company has recently completed its initial investment round through this fund.
Recent Acquisitions and Plans
Zoom also announced its intention to acquire Karlsruhe Information Technology Solutions, known as “Kites,” a German startup. This acquisition aims to integrate real-time, machine learning-powered translation capabilities into the platform.
Previously, Zoom had pursued the acquisition of Five9, a provider of cloud-based customer service software, but that deal was ultimately terminated.
Here's a summary of key points:
- Ads will only be shown to Basic tier users joining meetings hosted by other Basic tier users.
- Ads will initially appear after meetings conclude.
- Zoom has updated its privacy policy regarding user content.
