The Importance of Initial Inspiration in Entrepreneurship
While financial resources can certainly empower individuals to begin entrepreneurial ventures, the initial spark – the activation energy to even consider such a path – is often more crucial. Cory Levy firmly believes this to be true.
Introducing Z Fellows: A Novel Approach to Founder Support
Levy, the founder of First Text, a platform facilitating connections between founders and investors, launched Z Fellows last year as a practical experiment. This accelerator program offers a unique one-week sabbatical experience, accompanied by a $10,000 investment – with the option of equity at a $1 billion valuation cap – for prospective founders.
Existing, highly-regarded programs like Y Combinator or the Thiel Fellowship typically demand significant commitments, such as leaving academic pursuits or dedicating oneself fully to a new idea. Levy proposes a different approach. He suggests simulating the entrepreneurial lifestyle for a short period, allowing individuals to assess their interest without substantial risk. “If you enjoy it, excellent; if not, there are no negative consequences,” he explains.
Expanding into the Crypto Space
After successfully running four cohorts, Z Fellow has announced plans to broaden its scope, focusing specifically on the crypto world. This expansion aims to provide calculated risk-taking opportunities and inspire innovation within the decentralized technology sector.
The new, crypto-focused accelerator will maintain the traditional venture capital investment component. However, it will also feature specialized programming addressing the complexities of the crypto landscape, including regulatory considerations and optimal technology utilization. Mentorship, speaker series, and daily check-ins will be provided by leaders and investors from prominent billion-dollar crypto companies.
Targeting Key Areas within Crypto
This marks the first of what could be numerous industry-specific accelerators. Levy believes the timing is opportune, given the substantial investment flowing into the crypto space. He is actively seeking startups focused on areas such as:
- Crypto infrastructure
- NFTs
- DAOs
- DeFi protocols
- Gaming
Addressing Quality Assurance and Diversity
Because Z Fellows requires less commitment than programs like Y Combinator, maintaining quality control is a consideration. The program’s accessibility – a week of paid time off and a $10,000 check – makes it an attractive opportunity for many to explore their entrepreneurial ambitions. Currently, approximately one-third of Z Fellows participants come from underrepresented backgrounds, defined as women, people of color, and/or immigrants.
Levy’s current focus is on encouraging exploration and experimentation rather than rigorous vetting. He personally interviews each fellow, believing the program’s limited duration and mentorship structure are key differentiators in a capital-rich environment.
The Enduring Value of Mentorship and Networks
“Even if capital isn’t a primary need, the value of mentorship and a network of insightful individuals remains constant,” Levy stated. “This holds true whether you’re operating in Web 2.0 or Web 3.0.”
