YouTube to Penalize Election Misinformation Channels

YouTube has recently declared that channels disseminating “inaccurate assertions” regarding the U.S. presidential election will face penalties in the form of a strike, leading to a temporary suspension of their video posting privileges.

The timing of this decision may seem delayed, but YouTube initially communicated last month – a month following the presidential election, coinciding with the conclusion of the “safe harbor” period for audits and recounts – that it would be taking down videos that assert extensive fraud or inaccuracies in the election process. However, a period of leniency was implemented, during which videos would be removed without triggering further account penalties.

YouTube clarifies that this period of leniency was scheduled to conclude on January 21st, following the Inauguration Day. However, given the certification of the election results earlier today, occurring after a demonstration by supporters of President Trump at the Capitol building, the Google-operated video platform is now bringing that period to an immediate end.

YouTube further states that it has already taken down “numerous videos that propagated misleading information alleging widespread voter fraud influenced the outcome of the 2020 election,” including content uploaded by President Trump himself. This includes the removal of a video posted by President Trump yesterday, in which he addressed those involved in the demonstration, saying, “Go home, we love you. You’re very special.”

The consequences for receiving a strike vary based on the number of violations. A first strike leads to a one-week prohibition on uploading videos or conducting livestreams, modifying playlists, or sharing other content on YouTube. A second strike within a 90-day timeframe results in a two-week suspension, while a third strike leads to permanent account termination.

A representative from Google released the following statement regarding these changes:
