YouTube TV Expands Spanish-Language Content Offering

Google’s television streaming platform, YouTube TV, has revealed plans to broaden its selection of Spanish-language networks. This expansion includes additions to the standard subscription package and the forthcoming launch of a dedicated add-on package focused on Spanish-language programming.

New Channels Included in Base Package

Effective immediately, all YouTube TV subscribers will receive access to three new networks without any extra charge: Univision, UniMás, and Galavisión. These channels complement the existing lineup of over 85 live TV channels, featuring major networks such as Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS, alongside entertainment options from Discovery and ViacomCBS.

This enhancement will provide members with a wider array of Spanish-language content. Upcoming highlights include primetime series like “La Desalmada” and “Vencer El Pasado” this fall, the reality competition “Nuestra Belleza Latina” beginning September 26, and the 22nd Annual Latin Grammy Awards on November 18.

Sports Programming and Local Access

The additions also encompass a variety of sports programming, including the Campeones Cup on September 29, and ongoing coverage of Liga MX, UEFA Champions League, MLS, and the Mexican National Team.

Subscribers residing in key Hispanic markets – including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, and Chicago – will have access to local news, weather, and other programming from Univision and UniMás. Furthermore, YouTube TV will integrate Univision’s on-demand video library, allowing subscribers to authenticate access via the Univision app using their existing YouTube TV credentials.

Pricing and Future Add-ons

The financial specifics of this agreement were not disclosed. However, this expansion has not resulted in an increase to the base subscription price.

YouTube TV has incrementally raised its pricing since its inception, most recently to $64.99 last summer following the inclusion of 14 ViacomCBS networks. However, Neal Mohan, YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, recently indicated that no further price increases are anticipated in the immediate future.

In addition to the base package additions, YouTube TV intends to introduce a new add-on package, available for an additional monthly fee. This package will feature networks such as Sony Cine, CNN Español, Discovery en Español, Estrella TV, Cinelatino, and Fox Deportes. Details regarding the complete channel lineup and pricing will be revealed in the coming months.

Pantaya Streaming Service

The streaming service Pantaya, offering Spanish-language films and exclusive original series, will also become available in the coming weeks for an additional $5.99 per month.

Industry Response

Hamed Nasseri, Univision’s Vice President of Content Distribution, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it will ensure their audience has access to leading Spanish-language news, sports, and entertainment across all platforms. He highlighted the growing influence of the Hispanic community and YouTube TV’s commitment to serving this demographic.

Competition in the Streaming Landscape

YouTube TV is not alone in recognizing the demand for Spanish-language content. Hulu launched its ‘Español’ bundle in 2018, providing access to networks like ESPN Deportes and CNN En Español. While Hulu does not currently offer Univision, it does feature Telemundo. Fubo TV, conversely, provides both Univision and Telemundo, alongside a dedicated Español plan with numerous Spanish-language channels.

Prior to these additions, YouTube TV lagged behind competitors in catering to Spanish-speaking viewers. This new offering is expected to enhance its competitiveness within the streaming market.
