Apple’s iPadOS 26: A Potential Revolution for the iPad

Following the WWDC 2025 presentation, Apple has characterized the forthcoming iPadOS 26 update as “the most significant iPadOS release to date.” This assertion appears to be more than mere promotional hyperbole; iPadOS 26 possesses the potential to fundamentally alter perceptions regarding the functionality of a product, 15 years in development, that has often been perceived as an enlarged iPhone intended for a single user.

The updated operating system introduces enhanced multi-tasking capabilities, a redesigned windowing system, and the Preview application. While these additions may not possess the immediate appeal of a feature like “Liquid Glass,” for individuals attempting to maintain productivity on an iPad, this news is considerably more impactful than the latest musical release from Sabrina Carpenter.

Current iPadOS Limitations

Currently, iPadOS restricts users to a maximum of two open windows simultaneously, and transitioning between them can be cumbersome. For example, composing an email while simultaneously referencing a calendar to schedule a call with a colleague often necessitates repeated switching between windows, hindering efficient access to essential information.

When research is required – whether consulting press releases, interview transcripts, emails, academic papers, or a combination thereof – utilizing a smartphone as a supplementary, smaller screen becomes a practical necessity. This arrangement, however, is far from an ideal user experience.

Enhanced Multi-tasking with iPadOS 26

iPadOS 26 introduces new window controls, enabling users to view all open windows at a glance and arrange them intuitively for streamlined multi-tasking. These controls are also integrated with Stage Manager, allowing for the organization of windows into dedicated workspaces.

Consequently, Apple is phasing out the older multi-tasking features of Split View and Slide Over in favor of this more modern approach.

New Preview App and Menu Bar

The new Preview app on iPad allows for native editing and viewing of PDFs, incorporating features such as AutoFill and compatibility with the Apple Pencil.

Mirroring Mac functionality, iPad applications will now feature a menu bar, simplifying the location of commands and features. Developers are also granted the ability to customize the menu bar within their respective applications.

Furthermore, users can now pin folders to the dock for quick access, eliminating the need to navigate the often-complex Files application.

Improved Performance and Background Tasks

Beyond these quality-of-life enhancements, iPadOS 26 leverages the processing power of Apple’s silicon chips to execute demanding background tasks, such as video exporting, without interrupting ongoing workflows.

This advancement will prove particularly beneficial for podcasters, video editors, content creators, and professionals working with multimedia content. A new feature allows users to designate a specific audio input for individual applications or websites.

Enhanced Recording Capabilities

The iPad is also gaining a local capture feature, enabling the recording of video calls from any conferencing application, with subsequent access to both audio and video files.

The iPad as a Viable Laptop Alternative

While the iPad may not entirely replicate the comprehensive utility of a MacBook, consider a scenario where a company-issued laptop is a substantial 16″ MacBook Pro, weighing nearly five pounds and proving unwieldy for use on airplanes or trains.

For professionals frequently attending conferences, requiring extensive walking and the constant transport of a laptop for real-time news coverage, the portability and functionality of an iPad could represent a significant improvement – and a welcome respite from back strain.
