Meta AI Glasses Enhance Hearing - New Feature

Meta Enhances AI Glasses with Improved Audio and Spotify Integration
Meta revealed an update for its AI-powered eyewear on Tuesday, designed to enhance speech clarity in challenging acoustic environments. This new functionality will initially be deployed to users of Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses within the United States and Canada, according to the company’s announcement.
New Features Detailed
Alongside the audio improvements, a further update introduces the ability to control Spotify playback based on visual input. The glasses can now identify and play music corresponding to what the wearer is viewing.
For example, if the glasses detect an album cover, they can initiate playback of music by that particular artist. Alternatively, when focused on a decorated Christmas tree, the system can automatically queue up festive holiday tunes. While this feature leans towards novelty, it showcases Meta’s vision for seamlessly integrating visual perception with interactive app functionality.
Enhanced Conversation Mode
The more practically focused update centers on improving conversational clarity. Initially unveiled at Meta Connect earlier this year, this feature utilizes the glasses’ open-ear speakers to amplify the voice of the individual being addressed.
Users of the smart glasses will have the ability to fine-tune the amplification level. Adjustment can be made by swiping along the right temple of the device, or through the settings menu. This allows for precise calibration to suit varying environments, such as bustling restaurants, crowded bars, public transportation, or other noisy locations.
Industry Context and Availability
The effectiveness of this new feature remains to be evaluated through real-world testing. However, the concept of leveraging smart accessories to aid hearing is not exclusive to Meta. Apple’s AirPods already provide a Conversation Boost function, intended to prioritize the voice of the person you are speaking with. Furthermore, the AirPods Pro models now include a clinically validated Hearing Aid feature.
Currently, the conversation-enhancing feature is restricted to users in the U.S. and Canada. The Spotify integration, however, is available in English across a wider range of markets, including:
- Australia
- Austria
- Belgium
- Brazil
- Canada
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- India
- Ireland
- Italy
- Mexico
- Norway
- Spain
- Sweden
- The United Arab Emirates
- The U.K.
- The U.S.
The software update, designated as version 21, will initially be released to participants in Meta’s Early Access Program. Access to this program requires joining a waitlist and receiving approval. A broader rollout will follow subsequently.
