X Platform Experiences Service Disruption

Reports from users and data aggregated by platforms such as Downdetector indicate that Elon Musk’s X platform encountered an outage on Friday. TechCrunch personnel directly observed that while the X website and application remained accessible, several functionalities were impaired.

Specifically, the algorithmic For You feed and other feeds were unable to display content. Users also detailed issues including the failure of images to load and disruptions to XMoney, the platform’s banking service.

Reported Issues During the Outage

• Timelines appeared empty.
• Users were unable to publish new posts.
• The search function yielded no results.

The onset of these problems appears to have occurred shortly before 4 p.m. ET on Friday, with indications of resolution at the time of this report. A significant number of users registered their complaints with Downdetector.

Furthermore, many users voiced their frustrations directly on X itself, as well as on alternative social media networks like Bluesky and Threads. This marks the second instance of service interruption for X within a little over a week.

Recent History of Outages

A previous outage occurred on May 22nd, lasting approximately 24 hours. During that period, users experienced difficulties with message loading, timeline updates, and post visibility, often requiring page refreshes to view content.

The current disruption appears to be of shorter duration. Initial observations suggested intermittent functionality, with some features working on the mobile app but not the desktop version. Reports subsequently indicated a return to normal service.

However, the X Developer API v2 continues to display a degraded status. Just prior to the outage, X initiated the beta rollout of its new direct messaging feature, XChat, following a pause on encrypted DMs for improvement purposes.

Potential Causes and Company Response

Whether these recent changes contributed to the platform’s instability remains uncertain. Notably, the company has ceased responding to media inquiries since Elon Musk’s acquisition.
