For some time, Yahoo's innovations haven't consistently garnered significant attention. However, the company has demonstrated a notable return to form recently. The Yahoo Weather application stands out for its beauty and functionality, and at CES, they unveiled a compelling and visually striking News Digest app designed for the iPhone.

A Curated News Experience

This application functions similarly to a traditional newspaper, presenting a concise compilation of the most significant news events twice daily – at 8 AM and 6 PM. Unlike Google News and other similar platforms that rely on algorithms to personalize news feeds, Yahoo News Digest offers curated content.

Currently, a single edition is generated for the entire United States, with wider availability planned for the future. Each edition comprises approximately ten carefully selected stories representing the most pressing current events.

Exploring News Stories

When a user selects a story, they are presented with a summary sourced from multiple news outlets. A comprehensive list of original sources is also provided for those seeking more in-depth information.

The story view also incorporates supplementary resources, including relevant maps, links to Wikipedia articles, and recent tweets pertaining to the topic. Navigation between stories is facilitated by a swift swiping gesture, and an extended list of additional stories is available for continued reading.

Intentional Design Choices

The application deliberately lacks customization options for the primary news selection. Yahoo’s intention is not to present solely stories aligned with individual interests, but rather to highlight the most crucial events that users should be informed about.

Furthermore, the application is not designed for endless scrolling. A "Done" button, reminiscent of the Feedly app, signals the completion of the core news digest. While additional stories are accessible, the app aims to provide a focused update on important news, encouraging users to return with each new edition.
