xiaomi teases over-the-air wireless charging, but it’s not coming to its devices this year

Xiaomi, currently ranked as the third-largest smartphone manufacturer globally, has announced the release of “Mi Air Charge Technology.” This innovative system is designed to wirelessly transmit 5W of power to numerous devices simultaneously, functioning effectively from a distance of several meters, as the company positions itself at the forefront of a completely wireless charging experience.

According to Xiaomi, they have independently created a specialized charging station equipped with five phase interference antennas. These antennas are capable of “precisely identifying the position of a smartphone.”

The technology utilizes a phase control array consisting of 144 antennas to direct millimeter-wave energy specifically towards the phone using beamforming. The company states that this system will soon extend its compatibility to include smartwatches, fitness trackers, and a variety of other wearable technologies.

A representative from Xiaomi clarified that, despite their advancements in 80W and 120W wireless charging solutions, this new air charging system will not be integrated into commercially available products within the current year.

The company has outlined the operational principles of this new technology as follows:

The technology news outlet XDA-Developers reported on Friday that a Motorola representative showcased a working prototype of a similar remote charging system, also capable of delivering power through the air. There is currently no indication of when Motorola intends to make this technology available to consumers.
