For some time, bathroom scales have offered insights beyond simple weight readings. Withings has been at the forefront of this trend since 2009. Today, the company unveiled its latest innovation, the Withings Body Scan, furthering its ambition to become the go-to brand for comprehensive self-measurement.

Priced at $299, this sleek glass device goes beyond weight, offering measurements such as an ECG, segmental body composition analysis, and nerve activity monitoring.

FDA Approval Process

Due to the inclusion of at-home ECG functionality, the Body Scan requires a more stringent FDA approval process. This is similar to the delay experienced with the company’s ScanWatch, which features an on-wrist ECG, before its U.S. release compared to Europe.

Innovative Sensor Technology

The new Body Scan introduces several advanced features to the familiar scale design. It incorporates four weight sensors, ensuring body weight accuracy within 50 grams – an impressive 0.025% for a 200-pound individual.

Furthermore, the device features 14 ITO electrodes integrated into the platform and four stainless steel electrodes within a retractable handle. These sensors work in concert to collect data for a six-lead ECG and detailed segmental body composition analysis.

Detailed Health Data Analysis

The Body Scan provides daily analysis of key health indicators. These include heart rate, “vascular age,” and the aforementioned ECG measurements.

Utilizing multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, the scale can assess overall body composition. Beyond standard body fat percentage, it measures water percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass, and bone mass.

Granular Body Composition Readings

The device offers detailed readings for specific body areas, including the torso, arms, and legs, providing a more nuanced understanding of body composition.

Expanding the Withings Ecosystem

Considering Withings’ existing product line – which includes under-mattress sleep trackers, smart blood pressure cuffs, body temperature sensors, and a range of smart health and fitness sensors – the Body Scan represents a logical extension of the brand.

Enhanced In-App Health Coaching

Withings is also expanding its in-app health coaching services. Users can now access coaching, clinical specialists, and personalized nutrition and exercise plans to support their health objectives.

The app also allows users to export a comprehensive health snapshot with historical data. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals who actively collaborate with nutritionists, trainers, and other healthcare professionals.
