AWS re:Invent 2023: A New Era Begins

The annual AWS re:Invent conference is fast approaching, commencing next week. This event consistently serves as a platform for significant announcements regarding new features and products. It also provides an opportunity for AWS to engage with the press, customers, partners, and other stakeholders in Las Vegas.

A Shift in Leadership

This year’s re:Invent holds particular significance as it marks the return to an in-person format after a year of virtual proceedings necessitated by the pandemic. More importantly, it will be the first re:Invent led by newly appointed CEO, Adam Selipsky.

Selipsky transitioned from Tableau earlier this year following Jeff Bezos’ move to the executive chairman role, and Andy Jassy’s subsequent elevation to Amazon CEO.

Selipsky's Challenge

With the leadership transitions finalized, Selipsky is slated to deliver the keynote address. He faces the challenge of following in the footsteps of his predecessor. Jassy possessed a remarkable ability to articulate the connections between AWS’s extensive product offerings with apparent ease.

However, Selipsky brings a unique skillset to the role, as Jassy highlighted in his announcement to employees: “Adam offers strong judgment, a customer-centric approach, team-building expertise, demand generation skills, and proven CEO experience to an already robust AWS leadership team. His eleven years within AWS provide him with a deep understanding of our culture and business.”

Potential Strategic Shifts

Despite AWS’s continued market dominance, indications suggest Selipsky may be prepared to implement his own vision for the company and potentially refine existing business practices.

Recent reports indicate Selipsky intends to adopt a strategy similar to those employed by Microsoft and Google, focusing on industry-specific solutions. Previously, under Jassy’s leadership, AWS favored a more generalized approach, relying on partners to address specific industry needs.

His experience with Salesforce during Tableau’s acquisition may have influenced this perspective, leading him to believe that an industry-focused strategy could benefit AWS. Beyond this, Selipsky has not publicly disclosed any further planned changes.

Industry Analyst Perspectives

When asked for advice for Selipsky, several industry analysts offered their insights.

Holger Mueller, of Constellation Research, recommends streamlining the expanding product portfolio into a more manageable and focused catalogue. He stated that CTOs prefer platform offerings with clear versioning and roadmaps provided by AWS, rather than relying on developer ingenuity.

Patrick Moorhead, founder of Moor Insights & Strategy, suggests AWS expand its offerings further up the stack by developing more SaaS applications to compete with companies like Google, Microsoft, and Adobe. He also advocates for increased investment in hybrid cloud solutions, an area where competitors are gaining ground.

Maintaining Momentum

Despite these considerations, AWS remains highly successful. The latest quarterly report revealed revenue of $16.1 billion. However, Selipsky acknowledged in a recent interview with Bloomberg that sustained success requires continuous innovation and a proactive approach to competition.

“It’s really important to continue to act as if we’re insurgents and not to start to act like incumbents,” Selipsky emphasized.

At re:Invent, Selipsky will have the opportunity to present his vision for AWS, delivering the keynote address and outlining his priorities for continued growth. The coming week will reveal whether this involves any substantial changes or a continuation of the current trajectory.
