The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks Microsoft’s largest investment to date in Asia. Funding will be allocated to new data centers, advanced AI infrastructure, and comprehensive skilling programs between 2026 and 2029.

This builds upon the $3 billion commitment the company previously made to India earlier in January.

Major U.S. tech companies are increasing their investments in data centers and AI compute globally. India is emerging as a strategically important location.

This is due to its expanding developer community and its position as having one of the world’s largest populations of internet and smartphone users.

This latest initiative also increases competitive pressure on companies like Google, Amazon, and OpenAI.

These rivals are also expanding their presence in India to meet the growing demand for cloud services and AI tools from businesses, startups, and government entities.

The investment also supports New Delhi’s efforts to accelerate the development of digital infrastructure and the adoption of AI across various sectors.

India aims to establish itself as a leading global technology hub while simultaneously addressing concerns related to data governance and ensuring equitable access.

Key Announcements During Nadella's Visit

The announcement coincided with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s visit to India and followed a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

Nadella is scheduled to deliver a keynote address in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The Redmond-based company also revealed plans to launch a new data center region in Hyderabad by mid-2026.

This will be Microsoft’s largest data center in India, encompassing three availability zones – a footprint comparable in size to two Eden Gardens stadiums.

Microsoft will also continue to expand its existing three data center regions located in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.

Collaboration with the Indian Government

Microsoft will collaborate with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to integrate advanced AI capabilities into two key digital public platforms: e-Shram and the National Career Service.

This integration will provide AI-driven services to over 310 million informal workers.

AI-Powered Services for Workers

These government platforms will utilize Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service to offer multilingual access, AI-assisted job matching, predictive analytics on skill and demand trends, automated résumé creation, and personalized career pathways.

New Sovereign Cloud Options

Microsoft is also introducing new sovereign cloud options for Indian customers.

These include a Sovereign Public Cloud, currently available across its India regions, and a Sovereign Private Cloud powered by Azure Local for both connected and air-gapped operations.

These offerings are designed to help enterprises meet regulatory requirements, ensure data residency, and support high-performance workloads with access to the latest NVIDIA GPUs and Microsoft 365 services.

Expanded Skilling Initiatives

Microsoft’s skilling programs are also being accelerated.

Through its “ADVANTA(I)GE India” initiative, the company has already trained 5.6 million people since January – exceeding its initial goal of training 10 million by 2030.

Microsoft is now doubling its commitment and aims to equip 20 million Indians with fundamental AI skills by 2030.

This will be achieved through collaboration with government agencies, industry partners, and digital public platforms to broaden access to training opportunities.

India's Rising Prominence as an AI Investment Destination

A substantial investment pledge from Microsoft arrives shortly after Google unveiled a $15 billion initiative to establish an AI center and data infrastructure within India. This represents Google’s most significant investment to date in the nation, building upon a prior $10 billion commitment made in 2020.

Over recent months, India has become increasingly appealing to international technology companies seeking to broaden their AI capabilities. This attraction stems from the country’s extensive internet user base, a vast population of smartphone users, a rapidly expanding startup environment, and the Indian government’s proactive digitization policies.

Despite the influx of investment, hyperscalers are anticipated to encounter considerable challenges in India. Data center expansion is hindered by inconsistent power supplies, elevated energy costs, and water shortages in numerous areas.

These factors could potentially impede the development of AI infrastructure and increase operational costs for cloud service providers.

The Indian government is actively working to attract further investment from major technology companies. Large-scale data center and AI projects are considered crucial to the nation’s economic and digital-public-infrastructure goals.

New Delhi has implemented incentives for AI and semiconductor projects, streamlined certain regulatory processes, and fostered collaborations with local telecom and IT businesses to strengthen India’s position within the global AI value chain.

They also contribute to Azure Machine Learning and speech/translation technologies, serving both global markets and the company’s domestic operations.
