DoorDash Expands Services with DoubleDash Convenience Offering
Last year, amidst the height of the pandemic, DoorDash, a leading online food delivery company, broadened its services to encompass deliveries from convenience stores. Currently, DoorDash patrons throughout the United States and Canada are able to purchase items from a variety of stores and categories within a single transaction.
Introducing DoubleDash
The new program, known as DoubleDash, allows customers to supplement their restaurant meal order with items like toiletries and frozen desserts from local retailers such as 7-Eleven. In many instances, a single delivery driver will fulfill the entire order, consolidating it into one shipment and eliminating the need for extra delivery fees. However, service fees will still apply to each individual order.
The primary objective is to enhance customer convenience while maintaining predictable pricing. Local businesses stand to benefit from the potential for impulse purchases made by customers who prefer to remain at home. For DoorDash itself, this initiative represents a further step towards establishing the app as a comprehensive “one-stop-shop” for all delivery needs.
Consumer Behavior and Platform Improvement
Fuad Hannon, DoorDash’s head of new verticals, explained to TechCrunch that the company observed a trend of customers placing separate orders for convenience items within a short timeframe after ordering a meal. “We are continually seeking ways to refine our platform to better address customer requirements,” Hannon stated. “Recognizing this consumer pattern, we aimed to streamline and make this process more cost-effective.”
With DoubleDash, customers completing their initial order will encounter a pop-up notification suggesting additional items from nearby stores. Alternatively, the DoubleDash option is accessible on the in-app map, enabling users to locate participating retailers. The number of merchants displayed on the map will vary, ranging from one to five, depending on the customer’s location and proximity to stores.
There is no minimum order requirement for the second order, allowing customers to add as many or as few items as they desire.
Benefits for Delivery Drivers
According to the company, delivery personnel, referred to as “Dashers,” will be eligible to receive tips on both the restaurant order and the convenience store order. Dashers can utilize DoorDash’s logistical platform to accept and deliver both orders simultaneously, adhering to the primary delivery route, potentially increasing their earnings without significant detours.
Participating Merchants and Pilot Programs
Currently, the DoubleDash feature is available through partnerships with 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Wawa, QuickChek, The Ice Cream Shop, and DashMart, DoorDash’s own convenience and grocery store. DoorDash is also conducting pilot programs to integrate local restaurants into the DoubleDash system in select cities, including Los Angeles, Denver, and Portland.
This allows customers to combine orders, such as sushi and chocolate torte, at a slightly reduced cost and with increased ease.
Positive Reception from Businesses
Benjamin D. Arreola, owner of Señor G’s Fresh & Healthy Mexican Food in Playa Del Rey, California, expressed enthusiasm for the new program. “We are thrilled to participate in DoorDash’s DoubleDash initiative and to have the opportunity to reach a wider customer base and boost sales for our business,” Arreola said in a statement.
