Windows 11 Release Date Confirmed: October 5th

Initially, Microsoft announced a “Holiday 2021” timeframe for the launch of Windows 11 in June. However, the specific holiday remained undefined. Speculation ranged from World Teachers’ Day to an early Halloween celebration. Following indications of a late-October arrival, the company has now officially announced that the operating system will be available starting October 5th.

Early Release and Availability

This date falls on the earlier side of Microsoft’s previously communicated release window. The first significant release since 2015 will be provided as a complimentary upgrade for users with compatible Windows 10 PCs. October 5th will also mark the date when the first pre-loaded Windows 11 systems become available for purchase.

First Impressions and Key Changes

The initial preview build was reviewed by Frederic, who observed that it represented a substantial evolution beyond typical bi-annual Windows 10 updates.

Microsoft has detailed the major changes arriving with the October update in an 11-point blog post. A prominent change, present since the earliest previews, is a redesigned operating system interface for a more streamlined user experience.

Enhanced Productivity Features

The update introduces new Snap Layouts, Groups, and Desktops. These features are designed to facilitate a more organized multitasking workflow.

Furthermore, several of Microsoft’s online services have been more tightly integrated into the OS. Microsoft 365 is now directly accessible from the Start menu, providing quick access to recently used files and enhancing cross-platform functionality.

Teams has been added to the taskbar, reflecting Microsoft’s strong promotion of the platform. Widgets are also available on the taskbar, offering convenient access to information such as news, weather, sports scores, and stock updates.

Accessibility and Store Improvements

A comprehensive range of accessibility updates are included. Microsoft emphasized that accessible technology is crucial for inclusivity and opportunity. These updates aim to bridge the “disability divide” and expand access to education and employment.

The Microsoft Store has also received a design overhaul. The company has also pledged to increase access for independent developers to create new applications for the operating system.

Gaming Enhancements

The new version of Windows maintains a focus on desktop gaming, incorporating features like DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage, and Auto HDR.

Compatibility Concerns

Recent discussions have centered on compatibility with unsupported hardware and the criteria for qualifying as a supported system. Reports indicate that systems not meeting Microsoft’s requirements will not receive Windows Update after a manual installation.

This is a significant drawback, as Windows Update delivers essential security patches and other critical updates.

Phased Rollout and Support for Windows 10

“The free upgrade to Windows 11 begins on October 5th and will be rolled out in phases, prioritizing quality,” Microsoft stated. Drawing on lessons learned from Windows 10, the company aims to deliver an optimal user experience.

New eligible devices will receive the upgrade first. The rollout will then expand to in-market devices based on factors such as hardware eligibility, reliability, device age, and other considerations impacting the upgrade process.

Microsoft anticipates that all qualifying machines will be offered the upgrade by mid-2022. For those who do not upgrade, Windows 10 will continue to be supported until October 14, 2025.
