WhatsApp Enhances Group Call Functionality with Joinable Calls

WhatsApp revealed on Monday an expansion of its joinable calls feature, extending its availability to group conversations. Initially launched in July, joinable calls permit users to seamlessly integrate into an already-in-progress group call.

This latest update introduces the ability for users to initiate a call to a WhatsApp group and directly enter the call from within the group chat interface.

Improved Call Notifications and Visibility

The company highlights that call notifications will now prominently display the group’s name, rather than listing individual participant names.

Active calls are now clearly indicated within the chat list, enabling users to quickly identify groups currently engaged in live calls upon opening the application.

Facilitating Spontaneous Connection

“Our aim is to simplify spontaneous connections within your groups,” WhatsApp stated. “Users can now join ongoing calls with their groups at any time, with a single click directly from the chat window.”

Recognizing the increasing popularity of group calling, the integration of joinable calls provides WhatsApp users with a novel and immediate method for connecting with family and friends.

Enhanced User Experience

Furthermore, WhatsApp announces that calls will now feature a subtle, unique ringtone, designed to feel “as effortless as sending or receiving a message.”

Recent Feature Rollouts and Security Enhancements

The Facebook-owned platform has been actively deploying a series of new features in recent months, focused on both user retention and attracting new users.

Recently, WhatsApp announced the initial rollout of a feature enabling users to encrypt their chat history backups stored in iCloud or Google Drive.

While the platform already offers end-to-end encryption for chats between users, a means to protect those chats’ backups in the cloud was previously unavailable.

Addressing Security Concerns

The implementation of encrypted chat backups resolves a significant security vulnerability that has been leveraged by governmental entities to access private user communications.

WhatsApp confirms that this new feature is being made available to users across all regions where the application is supported.
