WhatsApp's Privacy Update: What Happens if You Don't Accept?

WhatsApp announced earlier this week that users will be given the opportunity to review the upcoming privacy update at a pace that suits them. A banner will also be implemented to provide clearer explanations regarding the changes to the terms of service.

Consequences of Non-Acceptance

According to an email sent to a WhatsApp merchant partner, and reviewed by TechCrunch, users who do not agree to the new terms by May 15th will be “slowly asked” to comply. This is to ensure they can continue to utilize the app’s full range of features.

Should users continue to decline the terms, they will experience limited functionality. For a limited period, they will still be able to receive calls and notifications.

Restricted Functionality and Account Inactivity

However, those who do not accept will be unable to send or read messages within the application. WhatsApp confirmed this plan to TechCrunch.

This limited functionality will persist for a few weeks. After this period, WhatsApp’s existing policy regarding inactive users will be applied.

Inactive Account Policy

WhatsApp’s policy states that accounts are typically deleted after 120 days of inactivity.

Initial Backlash and Clarification

The instant messaging platform faced criticism last month, particularly from users in India – its largest market. An in-app notification initially demanded agreement to the privacy terms by February 8th for continued service.

WhatsApp acknowledged that the update caused confusion and misinformation. They stated their intention to clarify their principles and provide accurate information in a blog post.

Data Sharing with Facebook

Since 2016, WhatsApp’s privacy policies have permitted the sharing of certain metadata, such as phone numbers and device information, with Facebook.

The updated terms will extend data sharing to include payment and transaction details. This is intended to improve ad targeting as Facebook expands its e-commerce initiatives and integrates its messaging platforms.

Delayed Enforcement and Ongoing Communication

With over 2 billion users, WhatsApp postponed the enforcement of the new policy by three months. They have been actively communicating the terms to users since then.

However, previous explanations had not explicitly detailed the consequences for users who chose not to accept the updated terms.
