Selecting the Share icon activates the Share Charm, appearing from the right side of your desktop. The available social options within this charm are determined by the apps you have installed via the Windows Store.
For instance, in our demonstration, both Facebook and OneNote are pre-configured to manage image sharing requests originating from File Explorer.
Sharing Process
Provided you are already logged into your accounts, you can instantly share images – whether downloaded or edited – directly from the file system. This eliminates the need for a web browser or a separate email application.

Sharing via Email
The Windows 10 Share feature allows for the quick transmission of pictures, documents, and files to contacts through email. This provides a convenient method for instant file sharing.
If the Email button appears grayed out during use, a compatible, desktop-based email client must first be installed and recognized by Windows as the default program.

Mozilla Thunderbird is used here as an example to manage the email request. Following installation of your chosen desktop email client, it must be designated as the default mail handler within Windows 10 settings.
Begin by accessing the Settings application, then navigate to the System section to initiate this process.
Within the System sidebar, scroll down to locate and select the Default Apps page. From there, choose the option labeled "Set defaults by app."
The subsequent window will display a list. Browse this list to find the email application you previously downloaded and installed.
Selecting the application will reveal a link at the bottom reading "Choose defaults for this program". To activate the Mail icon within the Share menu, toggle the “Send Mail Command” option for Thunderbird, or your preferred email client.
Linking this setting to your chosen email client will illuminate the Email icon in File Explorer. This allows for the automatic sending of any file directly through your preferred email application!
Sharing Files with Local and Networked Users
Let's explore how to share files with individuals on your local WiFi network. Windows 10 provides two updated methods for file sharing, building upon features available in Windows 8.1. These options are readily accessible directly within the File Explorer interface.
The initial approach involves sharing with other users on your local network, assuming a homegroup has already been established. This simplifies the process of transferring files between computers.
Upon selecting the intended recipient, you can adjust their access permissions by clicking the arrow adjacent to their name. This functionality is particularly useful when collaborative access is desired, while still retaining administrative control over the file.
Alternatively, files can be shared directly with other user accounts on the same computer. This is achieved through the “Specific People” option found within the Share tab.
Choosing this option ensures that only users registered on the local computer will receive the file, which will appear on their desktop upon their next login.
File Compression with Windows
When dealing with sizable files that may exceed the limitations of typical email programs, Microsoft provides a convenient compression feature within the Share toolbar. This tool effectively reduces the size of files intended for distribution.
To generate a .zip archive for sharing purposes, simply select the "Zip" icon located in the upper-right corner of the File Explorer window.
Creating a Zip Archive
Upon activation, a compressed archive of the containing folder will be automatically generated within the same directory. This archive will be ready for you to customize its name.

It’s important to note that while revoking share permissions within Windows 10 itself is simple, any files previously sent to social media platforms require deletion directly on those sites. For instance, a photograph posted to Facebook must be removed from Facebook’s servers to ensure complete privacy.
