Duda Acquires Snipcart: Expanding Web Building Capabilities

Duda Acquires Snipcart to Enhance E-commerce Capabilities
Duda, a leading website development platform, announced on Wednesday the acquisition of Snipcart, a Canadian startup specializing in adding shopping cart functionality to websites.
First Acquisition and Funding
This marks Duda’s inaugural acquisition, following a $50 million Series D funding round completed in June. This recent investment brings the company’s total funding to $100 million.
Itai Sadan, Duda’s co-founder and CEO, refrained from disclosing the financial details of the acquisition.
Driven by E-commerce Growth
Duda collaborates with digital agencies and SaaS businesses, currently supporting approximately 1 million published, paid websites. The surge in e-commerce website creation, accelerated by the global pandemic, was a key driver behind this strategic move, Sadan explained to TechCrunch.
A Talented Team and Integration Plans
The acquisition extends beyond just technology; Duda also sought to incorporate Snipcart’s skilled team. The entire Snipcart team of 12, including CEO Francois Lanthier Nadeau, will remain with the company.
Full integration between the two companies is anticipated by 2022, with initial collaborative features expected to launch sooner.
Shared Values and Customer Base
Sadan highlighted the strong alignment between the two companies, noting the Snipcart team’s experience and shared values.
“We share a significant overlap in our customer base, particularly those prioritizing an API-first approach,” he stated. “Customers seeking more headless commerce solutions can now leverage Snipcart to build customized front-end experiences.”
Expanding E-commerce Market
According to Statista, the global retail e-commerce market is projected to grow by 50% to $6.3 trillion by 2024. Duda has already witnessed a substantial 265% year-over-year increase in e-commerce sites built on its platform.
This growth is what positioned Snipcart as an appealing acquisition, enabling Duda to further accelerate its expansion and serve its growing customer base of over 17,000.
New Capabilities and Inventory Management
The combined companies will introduce enhanced features, including integrated payment and membership tools within the Duda platform.
Many Duda customers manage their own inventory and prefer a streamlined solution. Snipcart will provide the necessary component to make their inventory readily available for online purchase.
Focus on Transactional Websites
“The increasing demand for transactional capabilities on websites and web experiences was the primary factor in our search for an e-commerce platform,” Sadan concluded.
