Weavit App: Identify Your Thoughts Like Shazam

Introducing Weavit: A Novel Approach to Note-Taking

A new application, Weavit, aims to revolutionize how individuals capture and organize their thoughts. It functions as a “Shazam for your thoughts,” providing a rapid method for recording ideas with a single button press.

These captured thoughts are then intelligently linked to relevant content within a comprehensive knowledge base.

How Weavit Works

Currently, Weavit establishes connections between your notes and your contacts, scheduled meetings, specific topics, and various web resources.

This allows users to quickly document inspiration and ideas without the initial need for structured organization.

The Brain-Inspired Design

The startup’s founders posit that this approach mirrors the natural functioning of the human brain.

Komal Narwani, Weavit’s co-founder, explains that thoughts often arise in an unstructured manner, not neatly fitting into pre-existing notes.

The goal is to enable users to simply record their thoughts and allow the application to handle the organization, facilitating later retrieval and a streamlined presentation of information.

Capturing and Processing Ideas

Ideas can be entered into Weavit’s system either through typing or voice dictation.

The application then employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology to identify and link key elements within the note to relevant people, locations, events, and subjects.

For example, mentioning “CES” in a note will automatically identify it as an event and connect it to other content referencing “CES.” (Weavit leverages over 60 million Wikipedia topics for these connections.)

Furthermore, individuals mentioned in your notes can be linked to their associated companies, previous interactions, or upcoming meetings.

Enhancing Knowledge Building

This automated linking process simplifies the process of expanding upon existing knowledge as ideas are recorded.

Weavit also supports conventional organizational tools, such as hashtags and @ mentions, allowing for manual connections when desired.

The Origins of Weavit

Emmanuel Lefort, Weavit’s co-founder, conceived the idea while working at a financial institution.

The bank struggled to fully utilize valuable information residing within employees’ professional networks when selling financial products.

He envisioned a system that could automatically connect information without the burden of manual CRM data entry.

Privacy and Future Development

Currently, Weavit prioritizes user privacy; all recorded content is private and encrypted, both during storage and transmission.

The initial focus is not on connecting users’ content across a broader network, but rather on individual knowledge management.

Availability and Access

Weavit is presently available exclusively on iOS and requires an access code due to its ongoing testing phase.

TechCrunch readers can gain access using the code “braincrunch.”

Weavit vs. Existing Tools

Narwani believes Weavit occupies a unique niche, offering a more accessible alternative to complex graph database-powered tools like Roam Research or Obsidian.

While these tools offer greater power and flexibility, they can be challenging for less technically inclined users to adopt.

Weavit aims to be user-friendly, suitable for capturing a wide range of information – from work-related notes and research to personal reminders, movie recommendations, or website links.

Funding and Team

The startup secured a $1.25 million seed funding round in 2020, led by Fluxus Ventures.

The team consists of six full-time members based in Hong Kong.

Recent Updates and Growth

The app underwent a significant overhaul based on user feedback and was relaunched in December 2021.

The new version has already garnered 1,500 sign-ups within its first ten days on the App Store, according to the company.

Future Plans

The Weavit team is actively developing a web application and a Chrome extension.

The Chrome extension will enable users to capture images and web pages directly from their browser, expanding Weavit’s content collection capabilities beyond user-generated thoughts and ideas.

An Android application is also planned for future release.
