Waymo on Google Maps: Book a Driverless Ride

Waymo One Integration with Google Maps
Waymo One, the autonomous ride-hailing service operating in the Phoenix metropolitan area, is now directly integrated with Google Maps for booking and access.
First Fully Autonomous Option in Google Maps
This marks the initial instance of a completely driverless ride-hailing service being offered within the Google Maps application. The rollout will commence with Android users, as announced by Waymo on Thursday.
This collaboration unites two companies under the Alphabet umbrella and demonstrates Waymo’s strategy to enhance its public profile and broaden accessibility.
Waymo's Fleet Details
Waymo currently maintains a fleet of approximately 600 vehicles across the United States. Between 300 and 400 of these vehicles are stationed in the Phoenix region.
However, not all vehicles within the Phoenix area are actively deployed as part of the driverless Waymo One fleet. The Waymo One service exclusively utilizes vehicles without a human safety operator physically present in the driver’s seat.
Consequently, users can be confident that any Waymo One option appearing on Google Maps represents a genuinely driverless experience. Some vehicles are still dedicated to ongoing testing procedures.
Waymo does not publicly disclose the precise number of driverless vehicles currently operating within its service.
Booking Process Through Google Maps
The booking procedure currently involves transitioning between applications. Direct booking and payment for Waymo One rides are not yet available directly within Google Maps.
Instead, users are redirected to the Waymo application to finalize their booking. Users must first enter their desired destination or pickup location within Waymo’s service area in Metro Phoenix – encompassing areas like Chandler, Mesa, and Tempe – using an Android device.
Upon selecting the ridesharing or transit option, users will view the estimated fare and arrival time for their trip with Waymo.
User Experience for New and Existing Riders
Current Waymo One users will be directed to the Waymo app to complete their ride booking. New users will be prompted to download the Waymo app from the Google Play Store.
