Waymo Expands Robotaxi Service in California

Waymo Expands Robotaxi Service in California
Waymo is broadening the operational range of its robotaxi service, adding 80 square miles across Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Silicon Valley, as was announced on Tuesday.
Currently, Waymo’s commercially available service area encompasses over 250 square miles throughout California.
Recent Service Adjustments
This expansion follows shortly after incidents involving vandalism and arson targeting several Waymo robotaxis during protests in Los Angeles. These protests were related to the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
The damage to the vehicles led to a temporary reduction in service within Los Angeles.
Further precautionary measures were implemented on Friday, with Waymo limiting service nationally in anticipation of broader demonstrations concerning immigration policies.
Ongoing Monitoring and Expansion
According to Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli, the company consistently assesses and modifies its operations based on factors like traffic patterns, scheduled events, and local regulations.
He confirmed that service remains temporarily restricted in certain areas of Los Angeles, including the downtown core, and that the situation is being closely monitored for a potential service resumption.
Continued Market Growth
Despite these recent events, the Alphabet-owned company’s expansion into new markets appears undeterred.
New Service Areas
Beginning Tuesday, Waymo’s service became accessible to riders in several San Francisco Bay Area communities. These include Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, and Burlingame.
Additionally, the service is now available in the Silicon Valley towns of Palo Alto and Menlo Park.
Starting Wednesday, the Los Angeles service area will extend to include Playa del Rey, Ladera Heights, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and the entire length of Sunset Boulevard.
Expanded LA County Coverage
Waymo reports that riders can now travel between Mid-City and Inglewood, as well as Westchester, utilizing La Cienega and La Brea. The company currently serves over 120 square miles within LA County.
Significant Growth in Ridership
The company has experienced a fivefold increase in weekly paid trips across San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin since June 2024.
Currently, Waymo is facilitating over a quarter million paid trips each week across these four markets.
The commercial fleet comprises more than 400 vehicles in Los Angeles and exceeds 600 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
