Waymo is preparing to broaden its autonomous vehicle (AV) testing program to ten additional cities in the current year. Initial deployments will focus on Las Vegas and San Diego, as reported by The Verge.

It's important to note that this expansion does not automatically signify the immediate commencement of commercial operations within these locations. Furthermore, initial testing phases won't necessarily involve fully autonomous operation.

Waymo has clarified to The Verge that fewer than ten AVs will be dispatched to each city. These vehicles will initially be operated by human drivers for data collection purposes.

Timing and Context

This announcement arrives shortly before Tesla’s fourth-quarter earnings call for 2024. Investors are keenly anticipating updates regarding Tesla’s advancements in robotaxi technology and self-driving capabilities.

Current and Future Robotaxi Services

Currently, Waymo provides a commercial robotaxi service in three metropolitan areas: Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Plans are also underway to introduce this service to Austin, Atlanta, and Miami later in the year.

Testing Methodology

The company, owned by Alphabet, has not yet confirmed whether a robotaxi service will be launched in any of the newly designated testing cities. Waymo typically initiates testing with a small fleet of human-driven vehicles.
