Waymo Recalls Software in 1,200 Self-Driving Vehicles

A software recall was initiated by Waymo affecting 1,200 of its self-driving vehicles. This action followed incidents where several robotaxis experienced minor collisions with barriers like gates and chains.

Details of the Recall

According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the software update was implemented late in the previous year. Waymo’s Safety Board determined a recall was necessary for that particular software version to ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements.

The recall was prompted by a preliminary evaluation opened by NHTSA in May. This evaluation investigated seven incidents occurring between December 2022 and April 2024, involving Waymo robotaxis colliding with fixed or partially fixed objects, including gates and chains. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in any of these events.

Software Update and Current Operations

In November 2024, Waymo deployed a software update to its fleet of 1,200 robotaxis. This update substantially reduced the probability of similar collisions occurring. Currently, Waymo operates a fleet of 1,500 commercial robotaxis across Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

The documents indicate that software updates were already underway when NHTSA began its review. Waymo maintained ongoing communication with NHTSA, discussing risk assessment for autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, the company shared details of nine additional collisions with similar barriers that took place between February and December 2024.

Previous Recalls

This isn't the first time Waymo has issued recalls. In June 2024, a software recall was issued for its Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis after an incident involving a collision with a telephone pole.

Prior to that, in February 2024, Waymo recalled earlier software versions after two of its robotaxis were involved in crashes with the same pickup truck being towed.

Key Takeaways

  • Waymo proactively addressed safety concerns with a software recall.
  • The recall involved 1,200 robotaxis and focused on collisions with roadway barriers.
  • NHTSA’s evaluation and Waymo’s updates demonstrate a commitment to safety in autonomous driving.
