Waymo Robotaxi Rides Double in Under a Year - Autonomous Vehicle News

Waymo's Rapid Growth in Robotaxi Services
Waymo is currently completing over 200,000 paid robotaxi journeys on a weekly basis. This information was recently disclosed by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai via a post on X, detailing the progress of the technology company’s subsidiary.
Current Operational Areas
Waymo provides commercial robotaxi services in three major metropolitan areas: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix.
This achievement of 200,000 weekly trips represents a significant increase for the company. Just two years prior, Waymo was facilitating approximately 10,000 rides per week.
Exponential Increase in Ridership
As highlighted by Pichai, the number of weekly paid rides has experienced a twentyfold expansion over the last 24 months. In August alone, the company reported 100,000 weekly paid robotaxi rides.
Waymo’s self-driving technology is accumulating substantial mileage. The company’s vehicles now cover more than 1 million miles each week.
Future Expansion Plans
Further growth is anticipated this year with the planned launch of commercial robotaxi services in Austin and Atlanta. These services will be offered in collaboration with Uber.
Additionally, Waymo intends to initiate a commercial robotaxi service in Miami, with an expected launch date in early 2026.
Competitive Landscape
Waymo’s existing operations and ambitious expansion strategies position it as a leader in the autonomous vehicle industry, particularly regarding commercial robotaxi deployment.
The landscape has shifted recently. Cruise has ceased its robotaxi program, leaving Zoox as a key competitor.
Zoox's Progress
Zoox has begun testing its uniquely designed robotaxis in both San Francisco and Las Vegas. However, it is important to note that Zoox is not currently operating a commercial robotaxi service.
Here's a summary of key points:
- Waymo completes over 200,000 paid rides weekly.
- Ridership has grown twentyfold in two years.
- Expansion planned for Austin, Atlanta, and Miami.
- Cruise has halted its robotaxi program.
- Zoox is testing, but not yet commercially operating.
