Waymo Expands Robotaxi Service in Silicon Valley | Autonomous Vehicles
Waymo's Robotaxi Expansion Approved in California
The California Public Utilities Commission has granted Waymo permission to broaden the operational range of its commercial robotaxi service. This decision allows the Alphabet-owned company to introduce its driverless ride-hailing technology to additional communities located south of San Francisco.
Current Service Areas
According to a recent announcement on X, this approval will not immediately alter Waymo’s existing deployment strategy. Currently, Waymo offers a commercial robotaxi service throughout the entirety of San Francisco.
Furthermore, the service extends to portions of the Peninsula and several Silicon Valley cities. These include areas within Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Sunnyvale.
The company’s total service area currently encompasses approximately 85 square miles, spanning both San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
Future Expansion Plans
Waymo is also pursuing the ability to provide service to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). However, this expansion is projected to occur over a more extended period.
In March, the company received a temporary permit to map roadways at SFO. It’s important to note that Waymo vehicles will not function autonomously within the airport grounds.
Instead, employees will operate the vehicles manually for mapping purposes. This permit represents the initial stage of a phased strategy aimed at eventually enabling commercial operations at SFO.
Operational Statistics
Waymo is currently facilitating around 250,000 paid rides on a weekly basis.
Its operational footprint extends beyond California, encompassing cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, and, most recently, Austin.
