Waymo Expands Robotaxi Service in Silicon Valley
Beginning Wednesday, Waymo is extending its Waymo One robotaxi service to the public within its early rider program. The expansion encompasses Mountain View, Los Altos, Palo Alto, and designated areas of Sunnyvale.
This development increases Waymo’s operational area in Silicon Valley to a total of 27 square miles. The service will operate 24/7, providing continuous access to autonomous transportation.
Growing Coverage Area
The newly added territories supplement the existing 55 square miles of coverage already available throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, as announced by the company on Tuesday.
This expansion represents a significant step in a year marked by substantial growth for Waymo, both in terms of commercial deployments and geographic testing.
Strategic Partnerships and New Cities
Recently, Waymo integrated its vehicles into the Uber ride-hailing app in Austin, Texas, allowing users to be matched with autonomous vehicles. Plans are underway to introduce this same service to Atlanta later in the year.
Autonomous trips for Waymo employees have been conducted in Atlanta since January. Furthermore, a partnership with African mobility startup Moove is facilitating the launch of Waymo’s service in Miami.
Waymo intends to initiate testing in up to ten additional U.S. cities this year, including Las Vegas and San Diego. This ambitious expansion is supported by a substantial $5.6 billion funding round secured late last year.
Competitive Landscape
The funding round valued the robotaxi company at $45 billion. With Cruise’s commercial operations halted, Waymo is currently positioned as the leading robotaxi company in the United States.
Competition is intensifying, however. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced plans to begin trials of a robotaxi service in Austin in June, with potential expansion to California and other locations by year-end.
Other companies are also entering the market. Uber and Avride (a Yandex spinoff) are planning a service launch in Dallas this year. Amazon’s Zoox is preparing for commercial launches in Las Vegas and, ultimately, San Francisco.
Here's a summary of upcoming launches:
- Waymo: Atlanta, up to 10 new US cities (including Las Vegas & San Diego)
- Tesla: Austin (June), potentially California & other locations by year-end
- Uber/Avride: Dallas
- Zoox: Las Vegas, San Francisco
