Waymo Robotaxis Tested on LA Freeways - Autonomous Driving Update

Waymo Expands Robotaxi Testing to Los Angeles Freeways
Waymo robotaxis are increasingly visible on the streets of Los Angeles. Now, these driverless vehicles are preparing to navigate the city’s extensive freeway system.
The autonomous vehicle technology company, owned by Alphabet, announced on Tuesday the commencement of testing its robotaxi fleet on Los Angeles freeways. This includes major routes such as Interstates 10, 110, 405, and 90.
Driverless Operation and Phased Rollout
Notably, these robotaxis will operate without a human safety operator present in the vehicle. Waymo intends to replicate its established approach of progressing from testing to commercial service, as implemented in other operational areas.
Initially, access to the driverless vehicles on LA freeways will be limited to Waymo employees. Subsequently, the service will be extended to the general public.
Strategic Importance of Freeway Access
Gaining access to freeways is crucial for Waymo’s commercial viability, especially in large metropolitan areas like Phoenix and Los Angeles where the company currently operates.
Customers are anticipated to favor Waymo over conventional ride-hailing options or taxis if the robotaxi can utilize the most direct routes, frequently involving freeway access.
For example, Waymo estimates that a journey from Santa Monica Pier to the Broad museum can be 50% quicker by utilizing Interstate 10.
Long-Term Presence and Regulatory Approval
Waymo has maintained a presence in Los Angeles since 2019, consistently mapping various neighborhoods. These include areas such as downtown, Miracle Mile, Koreatown, Santa Monica, Westwood, and West Hollywood.
In 2022, the company designated Los Angeles as a future commercial market, building upon its existing operations in Phoenix and San Francisco.
Approval to operate a commercial robotaxi service in Los Angeles, along with expanded operational territory in the Bay Area – encompassing the San Francisco Peninsula and San Francisco freeways – was granted by the California Public Utilities Commission in March 2024.
This expansion signifies a significant step in Waymo’s efforts to deploy fully autonomous transportation solutions in major urban centers.
