Waymo & J.B. Hunt Launch Autonomous Truck Pilot in Texas

Waymo and J.B. Hunt Initiate Autonomous Freight Test Run
Waymo is set to begin transporting freight for a significant client of J.B. Hunt Transport Services. This undertaking is being described as a “test run” and will be conducted within a key commercial transportation route.
Pilot Program Details
Waymo Via, the division dedicated to trucking and cargo solutions, will handle the transportation of goods. The route will span Interstate 45, connecting Houston and Fort Worth, Texas.
The vehicles utilized will be equipped with the Waymo Driver autonomous platform. However, each truck will also include a Waymo “autonomous specialist,” alongside a commercially licensed truck driver and a software technician, for operational oversight.
Existing Collaboration
This collaboration isn't entirely new. J.B. Hunt and Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, have been engaged in preparatory work for an autonomous truck deployment for a considerable period.
Waymo stated in a recent blog post that they have been conducting operational and market analyses with J.B. Hunt. These studies will continue as autonomous driving technology is implemented.
Preparation for Autonomous Integration
The companies have explored various aspects to ensure readiness. This includes establishing best practices for vehicle maintenance, anticipating future facility designs, and identifying optimal lanes for autonomous technology.
Test Run Scope and Future Plans
While Waymo has not disclosed the exact number of trucks involved in the pilot program to TechCrunch, a spokesperson indicated it will be a limited-duration trial. The objective is to collaboratively formulate a long-term strategy for future cooperation.
Waymo Driver Capabilities
The Waymo Driver is classified as a Level 4 autonomous system. This means it has the potential to operate without a human driver, but only under specific, predetermined conditions, such as favorable weather.
Expanding Partnerships
Waymo’s partnerships extend beyond J.B. Hunt. They are also working with Daimler Trucks to integrate the Waymo Driver into Daimler freightliners.
Furthermore, collaborations with Volvo are focused on developing electric robotaxis, and with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for autonomous cargo vans.
