Walmart & Flipkart to Deploy 25,000+ EVs in India by 2030

Flipkart's Commitment to Electric Mobility
Flipkart, the Indian e-commerce company owned by Walmart, announced on Wednesday its intention to integrate over 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) into its supply chain by the year 2030.
This initiative represents a comprehensive shift towards 100% electric mobility within the next decade, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability.
Strategic Partnerships for EV Deployment
The Bangalore-based firm has established collaborations with prominent EV manufacturers, including Hero Electric, Mahindra Electric, and Piaggio.
These partnerships will focus on the development of vehicles specifically tailored for Flipkart’s first and last-mile delivery operations throughout India.
Industry Trend: Amazon's Parallel Efforts
This announcement follows a similar move by Amazon, Flipkart’s competitor, who revealed a partnership with Mahindra Electric just a day prior.
Amazon aims to develop approximately one hundred electric three-wheelers for use in India.
Last year, Amazon committed to deploying 10,000 electric vehicles in the country by 2025.
Fleet Composition and Initial Rollout
Flipkart’s electric fleet will encompass a variety of vehicle types, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers.
All vehicles will be both designed and assembled within India, supporting local manufacturing.
The company has already begun deploying two-wheeler and three-wheeler EVs in several key Indian cities, such as Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Guwahati.
Government Initiatives and Policy Support
This transition aligns with recent governmental efforts in New Delhi to promote the adoption of environmentally friendly electric vehicles and reduce reliance on gasoline and diesel.
Reports from 2019 indicated that the Indian government was considering mandating ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber to convert 40% of their fleets to electric power by April 2026.
Flipkart's Sustainability Goals
“Electrification of the logistics fleet is a crucial component of Flipkart’s broader sustainability objectives,” stated Amitesh Jha, SVP of Ekart and Marketplace at Flipkart.
“It also reflects our dedication to the Climate Group’s EV100 initiative.”
Jha further emphasized Flipkart’s commitment to collaborating with local partners to procure and deploy EVs, while simultaneously fostering the necessary infrastructure development.
The company recognizes the importance of electric mobility in achieving both business success and environmental responsibility, and aims to encourage wider EV adoption nationwide.
Building an EV Ecosystem
Over the past year, Flipkart has actively worked to establish a robust network of ecosystem partners.
This network includes charging providers, skill development agencies, aggregators, and original equipment manufacturers.
Featured EV Models
Flipkart has identified specific models that will be integral to its electric vehicle fleet:
- Nyx series by Hero Electric: Offers an extended driving range of up to 150 kilometers (93.2 miles) on a single charge.
- Treo Zor by Mahindra Electric: Boasts a “highest-in-class payload” capacity of 550kg (1212.5 pounds).
- Ape’ E Xtra FX by Piaggio: Provides a reliable and efficient electric transportation solution.
