Bringing Vista Breadcrumbs to Windows XP

The developer behind yesterday’s Tabbed Explorer plugin has released another useful add-in. This one allows Windows XP users to experience the Vista-style breadcrumbs navigation feature.

This application is particularly beneficial for individuals who haven't yet transitioned to Windows Vista but are interested in adopting some of its newer functionalities.

Installation Process

Installing this application is straightforward. Simply extract the contents of the downloaded archive to your desired location.

Then, execute the QTAddressBar.exe file by double-clicking it. Choose the "Install" option and proceed by clicking the "Next" button to register the component within Windows.

Following installation, a system restart or logging off and back on is required. Alternatively, you can restart explorer.exe via the Task Manager.

To restart explorer.exe, use the "File" then "New Task" option after terminating the process.

Activating the Breadcrumbs

Once explorer.exe has restarted, right-click within the toolbar area. Then, perform the following two steps:

  • Deselect the standard Address Bar.
  • Select the "QT Breadcrumbs Address Bar" option.

This will enable a breadcrumbs implementation in Windows XP that closely mirrors the functionality found in Vista.

Disabling Vista Breadcrumbs

For those who prefer not to use breadcrumbs, even in Vista, a solution exists. The QT Address Bar application also provides a method to disable them.

Download QT Address Bar to manage breadcrumb visibility according to your preference.
