Verizon and Apple Launch 5G Fleet Swap Program

Apple and Verizon jointly revealed a new collaboration designed to simplify the adoption of 5G technology for their business clientele. This initiative, known as Fleet Swap, enables companies to exchange their existing smartphone fleets – regardless of their current service provider – for iPhone 12 devices with no initial expenditure and either no cost (in the case of the iPhone 12 mini) or a manageable monthly fee.

Alongside this announcement, Verizon also unveiled its initial two significant indoor 5G ultra wideband deployments tailored for its enterprise customers. General Motors and Honeywell are the first to utilize this technology, with General Motors implementing it at its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center, a facility dedicated to all-electric vehicle production. This development demonstrates how carriers are positioning 5G ultra wideband as a key feature for business applications rather than the broader, lower-bandwidth 5G services.
“I view 5G [ultra wide band] as effectively addressing requirements for both capacity and functionality. It is specifically engineered for industrial and commercial applications, leveraging millimeter wave spectrum and designed with the needs of businesses in mind,” explained Tami Erwin, CEO of Verizon Business.
It is important to understand that these two initiatives do not represent private 5G networks. Verizon also offers such networks and intends to introduce them on a wider scale in the future.
“Regardless of your progress in digital transformation, equipping all your employees with the capabilities of 5G Ultra Wideband through a powerful iPhone 12 model – the premier smartphone for business – represents not only an investment in growth but also a strategic move that will shape a business’s future success as technology continues to evolve,” Erwin stated in the official announcement.
Concerning 5G Fleet Swap, the primary objective is to expand the number of businesses utilizing Verizon’s 5G network and, for Apple, to accelerate the deployment of iPhone 12 devices within the enterprise sector. Apple evidently believes that 5G offers substantial advantages to businesses – potentially even more so than to individual consumers – due to its minimal latency, which is particularly beneficial for augmented reality applications, for instance.
“The iPhone 12 series is ideally suited for business use, featuring a completely redesigned aesthetic, an enhanced 5G experience, leading-edge security features, and the A14 Bionic chip, the fastest processor ever integrated into a smartphone,” noted Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Markets, Apps and Services. “Combined with Verizon’s indoor 5G Ultra Wideband and 5G Fleet Swap, a new device offering for businesses, it is now simpler than ever for companies to develop groundbreaking mobile applications that leverage the capabilities of the iPhone 12 lineup and 5G.”
Furthermore, the company is emphasizing the iPhone’s secure enclave as a significant security asset for enterprises. While some handset manufacturers produce devices specifically designed for durability, Apple contends that its devices are inherently robust and that a substantial ecosystem of third-party accessories is available to further enhance their ruggedness.
