VanMoof Announces New High-Speed E-Bike: The VanMoof V

Electric bicycle manufacturer VanMoof has recently secured $128 million in funding. A portion of these newly acquired funds is being allocated towards the development of an innovative product – the VanMoof V.

Introducing the VanMoof V

The VanMoof V represents a new addition to the VanMoof product range, specifically engineered as a high-performance, high-speed bicycle.

Currently, the VanMoof V is not yet available for purchase. The company initially unveiled the bike through a live stream on YouTube. The anticipated release date is set for late 2022.

Based on information presented on VanMoof’s website, the estimated retail price will be around $3,598, €3,498, or £2,998.

Key Features and Specifications

For this price point, consumers will receive an electric bike equipped with a dual-motor system. A motor is integrated into both the front and rear wheels.

Enhanced comfort and control are provided by dual suspension systems, located at both the front and rear of the bike. Furthermore, the VanMoof V incorporates robust tires to maximize rider safety.

The YouTube presentation indicated a potential top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). However, it’s important to acknowledge existing regulations concerning motor assistance on e-bikes.

In Europe, legal limitations restrict e-bike speeds to 25 km/h (15.5 mph). In the United States, these limitations vary by state, but generally remain below the VanMoof V’s maximum speed.

The bike will not exceed legal speed limits. Motor assistance will cease once the maximum permissible speed for the rider’s location is reached. VanMoof has explicitly stated that the VanMoof V is designed to operate within the bounds of the law.

VanMoof’s Vision and Advocacy

“Our initial vision for the V quickly evolved into a completely new perspective on road usage,” stated VanMoof co-founder and CEO Ties Carlier during the announcement. “The VanMoof V will feature adaptable speed settings to comply with local regulations.

However, the bike possesses the capability to achieve speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour, or 37 miles per hour. Current regulations globally impose speed caps on this type of vehicle. Long-term, a more progressive approach is needed.”

Carlier continued, “We believe that existing policies hinder the widespread adoption of this form of transportation. We advocate for policies that prioritize people over cars. Therefore, we will collaborate with city governments to explore geofencing technologies and promote updated speed regulations.”

A Concept and a Call to Action

Essentially, the VanMoof V should be viewed as a demonstration of VanMoof’s forward-thinking approach. It also serves as a platform for advocating policy changes with governing bodies worldwide.

The company proactively shared its plans, recognizing that achieving a speed of 25 km/h does not necessitate a two-wheel drive system.

Reservations and Availability

VanMoof is currently extending invitations to existing VanMoof customers and crowdfunding supporters. These invitations offer the opportunity to reserve a VanMoof V with a $20 deposit.

Reservations are being accepted starting today, with the anticipated release still slated for late 2022.
